CPD MADE SIMPLE

What is IPD and CPD?
Early in your career the development and training you undertake is focused on the
need to gain skills and knowledge to qualify as a professional, by acquiring the
competencies necessary to satisfy the professional review. This phase is sometimes
known as Initial Professional Development or IPD. It is also a period when the good
habits of a conscientious professional - of maintaining and developing competence -
are embedded.

After this the focus changes to maintaining and enhancing competence and acquiring
other relevant competences in response to job demands and personal aspirations,
using learning to open up opportunities for career advancement and business success.
This is known as Continuing Professional Development or CPD.

Why do we need CPD?

It is not possible to train for a career and expect that once qualified there is little more
to learn. The growth of knowledge and competitive pressures, both social and
economic, make it essential that an individual’s needs are continuously under review.
Employers often require employees to be more flexible and many career opportunities
require individuals to have broader education and training achievements.

In addition, there is increasing emphasis on competence. Many ILP members are

required to exercise professional judgement, often on matters linked to health and
safety and management. Only someone who is able to demonstrate ongoing
competence will be able to make a reasonable professional judgement. Recording
evidence of CPD will demonstrate your CPD achievements and is evidence of both
your continuing competence and your aim to realise your full potential.

The ILP’s Requirements

It is an obligation of membership of the ILP that CPD is both planned and recorded.
In particular, ILP Council, national Committee members and Regional Committee
members should lead by example. The ILP recommends that you carry out regular
reviews of your career aims and objectives and identify education, training and
assessment needs.
You should ensure that you have evidence demonstrating that you have engaged in
activities related to CPD amounting to at least 30 hours per year.

When seeking transfer to a higher class of membership you must provide evidence of
your CPD activities and a plan of your proposed CPD activities for the forthcoming
twelve months.

CPD Action Plan

As an individual you should identify CPD needs and detail the action required, taking
into account:-

 career intentions, short and long term

 levels of experience, skills and knowledge
 learning opportunities available
 your employer's business objectives
 relevant personal interests
 guidelines and requirements of the ILP

ILP CPD Record

It is required that a summary of CPD is held in the prescribed format as shown on the
ILP website (www.theilp.org.uk) and available from there as a downloadable
spreadsheet. The critical headings are:

 Date (of activity)

 Item (activity)
 Organiser (of the activity, if applicable)
 Total hours
 CPD hours (often less than the total hours)
 Type of (CPD) activity (e.g. attending Technical Seminar)
 Key Learning Points
 Benefits and Achievements
 Evaluation

Key activities in this process are:

1. Planning the CPD Activities
2. Doing the CPD Activities
3. Reflecting - Recording the Key Learning Points and Benefits and
Achievements
4. Evaluation- Evaluating the activity overall and how this meets the
requirements of your CPD plan

CPD Activities
Activities which are relevant to your own professional development may include the
following activities. This list is not exhaustive. You may be able to identify other
activities that meet your own specific requirements. It is important is that your CPD
covers a range of activities and isn’t concentrated in one area.
