Experiment # 1

Title:
● Structural analysis of Cantilever beam with point load
● Structural analysis of Cantilever beam with uniformly distributed load
● Structural analysis of Fixed beam with point load
● Structural analysis of Fixed beam with uniformly distributed load

Objectives:
I. Shear Stress
II. Shear Moment Diagram
III. Deflection

Apparatus:
Ansys Workbench 18.1

Procedure:
 Cantilever beam with point load.
1. Open ANSYS Workbench and drag the Static Structural module into the Project
Schematic.
2. Right-click on Geometry and select "Open Design Modeller."
3. Set the units to millimetres (mm), sketch a line from the center, and designate it as
a sketch line.
4. Define the line as a circular cross-section.
5. Go to the Model section and create a mesh.
6. Apply a fixed support to one end of the beam.
7. Apply a 2000N point load at the opposite end of the beam in the -y direction.
8. In the Solution settings, add the required shear stress, shear force diagram, and
bending moment.
9. Run the solution to compute the desired stress results.
10. The solution will display the maximum and minimum stress values for the
analysis.
11. Finally, capture images of the results using the "Figure" or "Image" option in the
analysis section.

 Cantilever beam with uniformly distributed load.

1. Launch ANSYS Workbench and add the Static Structural module to the Project
Schematic.
2. Right-click on Geometry and select "Open Design Modeler."
3. Set the units to millimeters (mm), draw a line from the center, and specify it as a
sketch line.
4. Assign the line a circular cross-section.
5. Open the Model section and generate the mesh.
6. Apply a fixed support to one end of the beam.
7. Next, apply a uniform distributed load of 2000N on the top surface of the beam in
the -y direction.
8. In the Solution settings, add the shear stress, shear force diagram, and bending
moment as needed.
9. Run the solution to calculate the required stresses.
10. The solution will display the maximum and minimum stress values for analysis.
11. Finally, capture images of the results using the "Figure" or "Image" option in the
analysis tab.
 Fixed beam with point load.
1. Open Ansys workbench, drag the static structural module into the project
schematic.
2. Right click on the geometry to open the design modular.
3. Select the units to mm. Sketch a line from center and make it line from sketch.
4. Make the line as of circular cross-section.
5. Now open the model section and create mesh.
6. Make both ends of the beam fixed support.
7. Than apply point load on any point of the beam of 2000N in –y direction.
8. In solution settings, drag the required shear stress, shear moment diagram and
bending moment.
9. Solve the solution to initialize the results of required stresses.
10. Solution shows the results of the maximum and minimum stresses for the analysis
11. In last, took images of the results from the option of figure or image in analysis.

 Fixed beam with uniformly distributed load.

1) Open Ansys workbench, drag the static structural module into the project schematic.
2) Right click on the geometry to open the design modular.
3) Select the units to mm. Sketch a line from center and make it line from sketch.
4) Make the line as of circular cross-section.
5) Now open the model section and create mesh.
6) Make both ends of the beam fixed support.
7) Than apply uniformly distributed load at other end of the beam of 2000N in –y
direction.
8) In solution settings, drag the required shear stress, shear moment diagram and bending
moment.
9) Solve the solution to initialize the results of required stresses.
10) Solution shows the results of the maximum and minimum stresses for the analysis
11) In last, took images of the results from the option of figure or image in analysis.

Observation & Calculations:

Fixed Beam:
Conclusions:
Cantilever Beam:

A point load at the free end of a cantilever beam creates the maximum
bending moment and deflection at that end. The fixed support must provide a reaction force
that counteracts the load, causing significant shear and moment at the support. Maximum
deflection also occurs at the free end, with the beam's resistance determined by its material
and moment of inertia.Cantilever Beams with Uniformly Distributed Load (UDL).A UDL
creates a parabolic bending moment diagram, with the peak moment at the fixed end.
Compared to a point load of equal total magnitude, the UDL causes greater deflection but
distributes stress more evenly along the beam.

Fixed Beam:

A point load at the center of a fixed beam creates a symmetric bending moment,
with maximum moments at the fixed supports. The fixed ends provide additional support,
reducing deflection compared to a cantilever beam with the same load. Reactions at both
supports are crucial to balancing the load and bending moments.Fixed Beams with Uniformly
Distributed Load (UDL).A UDL on a fixed beam generates a parabolic moment diagram,
with lower maximum moments than a cantilever due to the fixed supports. Deflection is
minimized at the center, highlighting the fixed supports' role in improving load-carrying
capacity and reducing bending.
