Kohlberg's Stages of Moral Developmet

" Right action tends to be defined in the terms of general individual rights and standards that have
been critically examined and agreed upon by the whole society"

-Lawrence Kolhberg

Individuals, when confronted by situations where they need to make moral decisions, excercise thier
own ability to use moral reasoning. Lawrence Kohlberg was interested in studying the development of
moral reasoning. He based his theory on the findings of Piaget in studying cognitive development. Our
ability to chose right from wrong is tied with our ability to understand the reason logically.

Kolhlberg's Theory of moral development

According to Kohlberg, below are the Stages of moral developmet.

1. Preconventional Level- Moral reasoning is based on consequences/ result of the act not on the
wheher the act itself is good or bad.

2. Conventional- Moral reasoning based on the conventions or norms of the society. This may include
approval of others, law and order. Pa

3. Post-conventional- moral reasoning based on enduring or consistent principles. It is not recognizing

the law but the principles behind the law.

Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Theory

"Children need people in order to become human"

- Urie Bronfenbrenner

Bronfenbrenner came up with a simple yet useful paradigm showing the different factors that exert
influence on an individuals development. It points out the ever widening spheres of influence the shape
that every individual, from his/her immediate family to the neighborhood, the country, and the world.
Bronfenbrenner's model also known as the Bioecological Systems theory presents child development
within the context of relationship systems that comprise the childs environment. It describes multipart
layers of invironment that has an effect on the development of the child.

Bronfenbrenner's Bioecological Model: Structure of Environment

•Microsystem- is the layer nearest the child. It comprises structures which the child directly interacts
with.

•Mesosystem- This layer serves us the connection between the structure of childs microsystem.

•Exosystem- This layer refers to the bigger social system in which the child does not function directly.
This includes the city government, the workplace, and the mass media.

•Macrosystem- this layer is found in the outermost part in the childs environment.

•Cronosystem- covers the element of time as it relates to a childs environment. This involves "pattern of
stability and change" in the childs life.

The Role of Schools and Teachers

Bronfenbrenner's theory reminds the school and the teachers of their very important role. If there is
a lack of support, care and affection from the home, if there is a serious breakdown of basic
relationships in a childs life, what can the school, the teachers in particular do?

Schools and teachers crucial role is not to replace the lack in the home if such exists, but to work so
that the school becomes an environment that welcome and nurtures families.
