Overview
Accounting internships allow students to work for companies in their field to gain work
experience or satisfy requirements for a college course or program. Learn how to find and
land internships.
Accounting internships allow you to work for companies in your field to gain experience
or satisfy course or program requirements. For example, many accounting programs
require an internship at an approved organization.
Internships help you gain valuable experience to transition into the workforce. Some
programs also require you to complete assignments during the internship, reinforcing
these newly learned skills.
You can include internships on your resume, which can help prove to employers that you
have hands-on experience in the field. While some internships offer wages in return for
work, many positions may be unpaid. Although unpaid internships do not offer financial
compensation, they can still provide exposure to the field.
An Accounting Intern, or Finance Intern, is responsible for practicing their accounting
knowledge and skills in a professional setting. Their duties include supporting accounting
teams with various accounting projects and tasks as they gain more confidence within their
desired industry.
Accounting Intern Duties and Responsibilities
• An Accounting Intern is a temporary, entry-level position with a certified financial
firm. Here are the duties and responsibilities that could be expected of an
Accounting Intern:
• Monitor any discrepancies in payment, monitor for charges made on credit cards
and record any returns.
• Organize a financial filing system that is easily accessible.
• Prepare accounting reports to be presented to senior management.
• Track all payments made for tax preparation and follow up on returns.
• Speak to clients about payments, refunds and statements.
• Ensure that all clients receive their financial statements on time.
• Ensure accuracy of financial statements, making sure that the final figures on
statements are correct.
• Assist with the balancing of the office/department budget.
Since Accounting Interns often partner with an employee at the company, they should have
skills reflecting teamwork and interpersonal communication. Also, since the interns hold a
position of trust at the company, they are often required to display strong accountability
and documentation skill with undiluted obedience to instructions.

APPENDIX A
“Clients and customers judge a company not only by the quality of its products and
services but also by the kind of service personnel who serve them”
Since service personnel make or unmake the image of their company it is important
that they act in a professional manner. Customers expect to meet professional sales clerk,
tour guides counter attendants, waiters, desk clerks, and receptionist or sales
representatives.
Being a “professional” does not only require mastery of knowledge and skill with
respect to a certain profession, or passing a professional or career exams or a earning a
degree. It is a character that demonstrates certain qualities and attitudes and a commitment
to professional ethics. One must be a professional in all respects – in one’s appearance or
physical projection, language and communications as well as in attitudes and manners.
B. Verbal Projection
• Being careful with tone, pitch and body language. Tone must be warm and not harsh
to the ear.
• Well-modulated voice – too loud can be interpreted as aggression; too soft voice
projects weakness of character and inhibition.
• Spontaneity in expression, not stammering. This indicates mastery of ideas, making
the person sound credible.
• Speaking with authority – ability to explain and justify ideas, readiness to answer
questions. This gives an impression that what knows he is talking about.
• Tactfulness – saying the right things at the right time and at the right place.
• Assertiveness in expressing oneself – sensitivity to the feelings of others, always
conscious of one’s social impact.
Accounting Internship | 27

• Yawning
• Grouping together with other staff for a chat while on duty

what you want)
• Shouting, giggling, loud conversation and horse playing
• Daydreaming, eavesdropping
• Indulging in customers’ private conversation
• Putting hands in pockets and then playing with coins
• Learning on walls, tables and chairs (for bellboys, security guards, escorts, etc.)
• Sneering or staring look

• Airing grievances against to company to customers
• Too much familiarity to the customers
• Bluffing customers
• Reading newspapers/magazines while on duty

Accounting Internship | 28
APPENDIX B
SOCIAL IMAGE
Social Image represents the impressions people make about us as they judge us on the
basis of our looks, body language, communications, attitude and behavior. More often,
people respond to us based on the impressions that they have about us. A confident,
conversant and assertive individual makes an impression of being smart.
It is very possible that people make wrong impressions. But what creates that
impression is what matters. Impressions are borne out of what people see and observe in
us. Therefore, every individual must be conscious of how he looks and behaves so as not
to be misjudged or misunderstood.
First impressions are usually created during the first contact with a person and are
often based on his physical projection – appearance, grooming, posture, poise, body
language and the aura that he projects.
Shabby appearance makes one look untidy and will certainly make a very bad
impression.
• Be free from body odor and bad breath. Use deodorants and mouthwash to avoid this
smell.
• Fingernails should be well manicured and clean.
• Nail polish, if worn by ladies must not be tattered.
• Gentlemen should keep their fingernails short. Nail polish is not advisable.
• Food handlers must have short nails. Bacteria can breed inside the nails and
contaminate the food.
• Keep hair neat and clean and free of dandruff. Those who work as food handlers are
required to keep their hair short. Ladies with long hair should have them clipped on
both sides or use a headband.
Clothing not only influences how others perceive you but also the way you regard
yourself.
• Always fit your dress to the occasion. If applying for a job, know the company’s dress
code so that you would know what to wear.
• Be restrained in your choice of clothes. Avoid using bright colors. Alluring styles like
plunging neckline, mini skirt, backless, etc. unless applying for a job that requires this
kind of style.
• If required to wear a uniform make sure it is clean and not wrinkled.
- Check hemlines and see to it that they are not torn or damaged.
- Have all buttons in space.
- Make sure clothes are comfortably fit to wear.
• If a uniform is not required use office attire – no shorts, no slippers, shirts must be with
collar, no denim jeans.
• In choosing a dress, consider what impression you must make to get the benefits you
desire.
Accounting Internship | 29
3. Ladies are advised to “make up” properly
There’s a saying that a woman is not confidently dressed until she is “made up”.
The word “made up” is not confined to facial make up. It covers the whole physical
make up including wardrobe, hairstyle, shoes, accessories, etc.
Facial Make Up
• Use light make up. A heavy one can make you look older.
• Use color appropriate to your skin. A darker tan powder or foundation goes well with
dark complexion, a lighter color for a lighter skin.
• If a foundation is used, spread it evenly. Dot the foundation with your fingers on the
forehead, cheeks and chin then blend over face evenly.
• Check for positive allergic reactions before using foundation/powder.
• Clean face thoroughly before applying cosmetics.
• Apply finishing powder.
• Use concealers under the eyes.
• Blush on both checks lightly in the hollow of the cheeks. Blend over.
• Apply eyeliner appropriately. Avoid a bold dark look as this can make the eyes look
smaller.
Accounting Internship | 30
APPENDIX C
• It should be well – organized so that it can be read in six to eight seconds. The preferred
length is one or two pages of an 81/2 x 11 inch paper no matter how many candidates
has.
• It should emphasize strengths and accomplishments and show that the applicant is
qualified for the available job. It should be demonstrate excellent writing skills, with
perfect grammar, spelling, and punctuation. A well-written resumé is tailored to the
available job and shows the applicant’s skills and talents suitable for the vacancy. A
resumé is not a life history.
• It should be attractive to the eye. The best way to ensure this is to use a computer.
Word-processed resumé may be easily and quickly accessed in order to make changes
and corrections.
• The resumé should be printed on a laser printer on a paper. If a copy machine is used
to copy on original, a quality machine should be used. Use wide margins, double-
spacing or indentations. White, beige, gray, or pale blue paper maybe used.
• The resumé should have the following components: heading, job objective (not always
necessary), work experience, and education.
Heading - the heading should include your name, address, and home and/or work
telephone numbers.
Job Objectives: If you have only a limited experience (or none), omit the job objective
because it may be limiting. A candidate with job experience should have a clear idea of a
career area. The job objective lets the employer know that you have gone through a
thorough analysis of your career.
The job objective immediately follows the heading and states a job title or specific
occupational field. Some objectives are:
❖ Administrative assistant to the director of sales.
❖ Legal secretary for law firm specializing in litigation.
❖ Medical trancriptionist in a metropolitan hospital
❖ Records management specialist for a manufacturing firm.
❖ Front desk clerk for a hotel.
Work Experience. This is the core of the resumé. Experience should be listed in reverse
chronological order or according to job function. This is to show your growth and
development in your field any major accomplishment can be included under the job
function. Use action verbs, which are verbs that help to create a well-defined image of
contributions and accomplishments.
Some action verbs are: analyzed, assisted, coordinated, developed, organized, performed,
planned, prepared, represented, supervised, etc. If you are a fresh graduate write down
your practicum experience or a task that was assigned by your family, or any summer job
that you may have had.

Additional resumé tips:

APPENDIX D
The Job Interview: Some positions may require two or three interviews. The higher the
job level and the more bureaucratic the organization, the more interviews there will be.
Appearance and Behavior: Research shows that most interviews decide whether to hire
someone in the first 10 to 30 seconds of the interview. The goal of the prospective
employee is to make that first impression positive. One of the ways to make a good
impression is to be well-groomed and appropriately dressed. Your clothes must be clean,
pressed, and in good condition. You should wear the kind of clothes that would be worn in
the office. A firm handshake is important. The handshake should be “palm to palm” and
shake once or twice, not more. If you get nervous, hold a cotton handkerchief in your hands
to absorb any moisture before shaking hands. It is best way to act self-confident, rather
than be shy. An employer is looking for someone who is assertive, self-assured, and
competent.
