Arithmetic Progression
Key Points:

1. Arithmetic progressions: An Arithmetic progressions is a list of numbers in which each term is obtained
by adding a fixed number to the preceding term except the first term.
OR
A sequence in which, the difference between any two consecutive terms is constant called Arithmetic
progressions.
2. Common difference: In an A.P. the difference between any two consecutive terms is constant called
common difference (c.d)
d=a2 - a1 = a3 - a2 = a4 - a3 = ---------

In general: OR
d = an – an-1 d = an+1 - an

Ex: If n =2 Ex: If n =2
d = a2 – a2-1 d = a 2+1 – a2
d = a2 – a1 d = a3 – a2

3. General form of an Arithmetic progression:

a, a + d, a + 2d, ……….
a first term, d common difference.
4. Formula to find the n term( General term) of an Arithmetic progression (from 1st term) an = a + (n – 1) d
th

5. Formula to find the nth term ( General term) of an A.P. from last term: ln = l – (n – 1) d
𝑎+𝑙
6. If a is the first term and l is the last term of an A.P. is given, then middle term is given by 2
𝑎+𝑐
Ex: If a, b, c are in A.P, then b = 2
7. In an A.P. If an is the nth term and d is the common difference, then the next term of an is
an+1 = an + d
Ex: If n = 4
a 4 + 1 = a4+d

a5 = a4 + d

8. Preceding term of an is given by an-1 = an - d

Ex: If n = 10
a 10 - 1 = a10 -d
a9 = a10 - d

9. Sum of first n terms (sn) of an A.P.
𝑛
 When first term (a) and common difference (d) are given (last term is not given) sn = 2 [ 2a + (n -1) d]

 When first term (a) and last term [an or l ] is given s = 𝑛 [ a + a ] OR s = 𝑛 [ a + l ]

n n n
2 2

10. Formula to find the sum of first n positive integers or natural numbers is

𝑛(𝑛+1)
sn = 2

Ex: 1 + 2 + 3 + ……………+ 10 = 55

5
10 (10+1)
S10 =
2

S10 = 5 x 11

S10 =55

11. Formula to find the sum of first n even positive integers or even natural numbers is sn = n ( n + 1)

Ex: 2 + 4 + 6 + 8 + 10=30
S5 = 5 (5+1)
=5x6

S5 = 30

12. Formula to find the sum of first n odd positive integers or odd natural numbers is sn = n2

s7 = 49
Ex: 1 +3+5+7+9+11+13=49
