Handgrip Strength

Assessment Summary:
The measurement of handgrip strength is an example of an isometric muscle action. The muscles do not
change in length, except that caused by the elasticity of the muscles and connective tissues. Grip strength is
related (r = 60) to muscle mass. Handgrip strength is mainly a function of the muscles in the forearm, with the
hand muscles also included.
Equipment Needed:
The lab will need a scale, stadiometer, par q, dynameter (electric and manual) and a stopwatch.
Instructions:
1. The participant should be a standing position
2. The participant’s head should be in the midposition
(facing straight ahead).
3. The grip size should be adjusted so that the middle
finger’s (third digit’s) midportion (second phalanx) is.
Approximately at a right angle.
10. Grip adjustments of 1.3 cm (0.5 in) on the Jamar™
Dynamometers (see Box 5.2 for calibration procedure) are made by slipping off the moveable handle
and repositioning it into the five manufactured slots: #1 5 the slot at the innermost position for the
smallest grip size.
b. Grip adjustments up to 4 cm for other dynamometers (e.g., Lafayette™) are possible.
4. The technician should record the grip setting; this same setting would be used for further tests on the
same person.
5. The participant’s forearm may be placed at any angle
between 90° and 180° (right angle to straight) of the
upper arm: the upper arm hangs in a vertical position.
6. The participant’s wrist and forearm should be at the
midprone position.
7. a. The participant should exert maximally and quickly
after hearing the technician’s following instructions: “Are you ready?”
b. “Squeeze as hard as you can.” As the participant
begins:
c. “Harder! . . . Harder! . . . Relax.”
8. The participant should make two 13,31,34 or three 35 trials
alternately with each hand, with at least 30 s 26 or up to
1 min 35 between trials for the same hand.
9. The technician should record the force in kg, then convert the circled best score to approximate
newtons by
multiplying the kg value by 9.8067.
10. The technician resets the dynamometer’s pointer to zero after each trial.
