The Enchanted Pool

Answer these questions

1. "This is an enchanted pool and it belongs to me."
a. How was the pool enchanted?
b. Who had enchanted it and why?
Answer: -
1. a. The pool was enchanted in a way that it would claim the life of the
person who drank its water without answering the Yaksha's questions.
b. Yama, the Lord of Death, had taken the form of a deer and a Yaksha and
enchanted the pool. He did this to test the Pandava brothers.

2. What was the warning given to the brothers? What happened to

them when they ignored it?

Answer: - The brothers were warned that they would die if they ignored the
Yaksha and did not answer his questions. All the brothers except Yudhishthira
ignored the warning and drank the water and died.

3. Whom did Bhima decide to kill? Was he able to carry out his
decision?

Answer: - Bhima thought that it was a Yaksha that had killed his brothers and
wanted to avenge their death. But he could not confront and kill the Yaksha as
he decided to quench his thirst first without answering the questions of the
Yaksha, resulting in his death.

4. "Finally, he decided to go and look for them himself... until he came

to a pool of limpid, calm water." a. What does 'finally' refer to? b.
How does the appearance of the pool add to the feeling of danger?

Answer: -

a. 'Finally' refers to Yudhishthira being the last brother to go to the pool. He sent
all of his brothers first and he was the last one to go to the pool.

b. The placid tranquillity of the pool is in direct contrast to the danger it actually
is. This contrast adds to the feeling of danger.

5. What are the two reasons that Yudhishthira was so heart-broken?

Answer: - Yudhishthira was heartbroken for two reasons that his brothers were
no more and that this had happened just when their exile was about to end. This
was not the end he wanted for their struggles.

6. Did Bhima and Arjuna observe the things that Yudhishthira

observed? Did they reason things out in the same way?

Answer: - No, Bhima and Arjuna did not observe the things Yudhishthira did.
Although overcome by grief, Yudhishthira took the time to think about their
deaths. He knew that there were no warriors powerful enough to kill his
brothers and that their bodies bore no wounds nor were there any footprints or
traces of enemies nearby, he thus concluded that there was some magical
element about their deaths. Arjuna and Bheema thought about none of this, they
were overwhelmed and driven by rage and thirst and acted hastily.

7. Yudhishthira was wise to reply to the questions and he also replied

to them wisely. Explain this statement.

Answer: - Unlike his brothers, who acted hastily without thinking much,
Yudhishthira was wise enough to observe his surroundings and deduce that
there was something extraordinary about their deaths and that he had to heed
the warning of the voice and proceed in order to save himself and not end up
like his brothers; he saw a way to salvage the situation. While answering the
questions of the magical voice, he was extremely wise and gave the right answers
rapidly and that pleased the Yaksha.

8. Do you think that Yudhishthira acted with more courage and less
pride than Arjuna and Bhima? What is shown by Yudhishthira's
readiness to answer the Yaksha's questions?

Answer: - Yes, Yudhishthira acted with more courage and less pride than
Arjuna and Bheema. His readiness to answer the questions of the Yaksha shows
his readiness to swallow his pride and act according to the situation. Arjuna and
Bhima did not do so; they were very proud in their abilities as warriors to
destroy their enemies and avenge the deaths of their brothers.
