Shrink It to Wonders: Crafting DIY Shrink Keychains

Introduction

Have you ever wished your favorite doodles or designs could become something you
carry every day? Well, prepare to be amazed as I show you how to transform this simple
plastic into a fun, customized DIY shrink keychains—perfect for gifts, accessories, or just
showing off your creativity! Throughout this essay, I will show you how to create an adorable
petite keychain with a step-by-step guide on how to decorate the plastic, heat it to shrink,
and preserve the design to have your very own specialized accessory!

Body

Choosing your desired design is always the first step in terms of crafting! For
most people, creating a DIY keychain is often inspired by their favorite lovable characters or
themes that suits their taste. Though there are countless varieties to choose from if you wish
to search for a simple yet cute design, you can always explore Google or, better yet,
Pinterest, where you'll find multiple sources to choose from. For this demonstration, I will
choose this cherry-heads as reference for my design.

Next, once you have chosen your desired reference, get your coloring
materials ready to start your drawing. First, we place our phone on a flat surface with your
reference prepared on the phone screen, then place the shrink paper on top, and lastly, cut
two pieces of tape to keep the plastic from moving. Now for the drawing, let us start with the
sketch. I suggest using a colored pencil rather than a graphite pencil to make it less
noticeable; this is to sketch its outlines for a better outcome of your drawing. After sketching,
this is where acrylic markers take its spotlight! Considering the outcome of your design will
be seen below the plastic, we will start with the outlines of the drawing. Outlines are one of
the most important elements in terms of art, so ensuring that the outlines are neat will
compliment the whole design. Once outlines are finished, we will head onto base coloring. I
will use a vibrant color of red as the base color for this design. Carefully color the base parts
so as to not slip off the edge, this will ensure that we will have a clean outcome of the
drawing. Once the base color is done, we will move to the central design of the drawing.
Since the two faces of the cherry share one same palette, I will choose this bright lime color
for my drawing. If your design consists of multiple details, I assure you that it would be
difficult for a beginner; so keep that in mind. Unlike before, you won’t have to worry about
coloring mistakes considering it wouldn’t be noticed below the plastic, so you may freely
color however you like!

Now that the drawing is finalized, we finally come to the last batch of my
demonstration! For this part of my tutorial, it is required to have an oven or heat gun.
Although I only own an oven, so we will focus on how to use that appliance instead. So first
off, we will need to cut our drawing to a desired shape first and cut a hole to insert the chain.
Keeping the keychain rectangular would feel awkward to hang on items, although it fully
depends on your preference of your design. Now that the plastic is cut, pull out the oven tray
and make sure to place a parchment paper atop of it. This will refrain from shrinking paper to
stick on the surface as it shrinks down to heat. Now that everything is prepared, put the oven
timer on for around 5 minutes. Though the timer may not be accurate, keep caution on the
shrink paper to avoid burning. We can observe how the plastic paper shrunk down to its
heat, once it’s fully flat, that is a sign to pull out the oven tray. Keep in mind to wear gloves!
Refrain from touching the keychain with bare fingers at all cost. It will take around 1 minute
for the keychain to cool down, and once it does, you may freely hold your beloved keychain!
But wait, there’s more! To preserve the back part of the keychain, we will use this UV resin to
keep the back unharmed. Once it hardens, you may insert your chain and now hang it
anywhere you want!

Conclusion

In conclusion, creating your very own DIY shrink keychain is not only a fun activity
but also a unique way to express your creativity and make personalized gifts for your loved
ones. Whether you're making one for yourself or as a thoughtful gift, the possibilities are
endless! So, gather your materials, let your imagination run wild, and start crafting your own
unique accessories today. Now, go on and shrink your ideas into reality!
