Week 3 Tutorial Activity – Jan 25-26, 2024

In this tutorial, you will discuss the given example (pages 2-4) in groups, then use the same
method to evaluate the integral on page 2 of this handout. Your detailed solution is due on
https://www.gradescope.ca by 11:59 pm on Sunday January 28 for participation marks. e
Instructions: Your TA will assign you to Group 1, Group 2, Group 3, or Group 4.
• Group 1 is responsible for figuring out how Step 1 works:
(a) How was the Riemann Sum set up?

(b) What is the width of each rectangle? b - a

Yralues
(c) What is the height of each rectangle? ,

(d) Are the x-values used to calculate f -values left endpoints or right endpoints?

• Group 2 is responsible for figuring out how Step 2 works. This may require the use of one or
more of these formulas:
n
X n
X n
X ✓ ◆2
n(n + 1) n(n + 1)(2n + 1)
2 3 n(n + 1)
k= k = k =
2 6 2
k=1 k=1 k=1

You can also use properties of summations such as

n
X
c = c + c + . . . + c = nc for any real constant c.
k=1

n
X n
X n
X
f (k) + g(k) = f (k) + g(k)
k=1 k=1 k=1

n
X n
X
c · f (k) = c · f (k) for any real constant c
k=1 k=1

The goal here is to turn the Riemann sum into an expression with n but no k’s.

• Group 3 is responsible for figuring out how Step 3 works. In other words, you are taking the
limit as n ! 1 of the result of from Step 2. You are welcome to use anything you learned in
MAT135 for this.

• Group 4 is responsible for figuring out what the answer should be, using the fundamental
theorem of calculus, and compare it to the result of the other method. You can find this in your
lecture’s slides or in section 5.3 of the textbook.

一一一

Everyone is encouraged to ask questions of your TA, if you find any obstacles.

When everyone is confident they understand their part, you will form NEW groups
with at least one person of each number. In other words, your group should have at least one
person from Group 1, at least one person from Group 2, at least one person from Group 3, and
at least one person from Group 4.

You will each teach each other your part. Then, as a group, you will figure out how to use
a limit of a Riemann Sum to find the following integral:
Z 4
(3x + 2)dx
0

Z 4
You will submit your solution to (3x + 2)dx, including all steps of the setup, summation,
0
limit, and check against the solution you get with the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. In
other words, complete all four steps and submit them to the “Week 3 Tutorial” assignment
on https://www.gradescope.ca/courses/14161.

The goal of these steps is to evaluate Z 3
