1) A rod 200 cm long and of diameter 3.0 cm is subjected to an axial pull of 30 kN. If the Young’s modulus
of the material of the rod is 2 × 105 N/mm2, determine:
(i) Normal stress,
(ii) Normal strain, and
(iii) the elongation of the rod.
2) During a tension test, a mild steel specimen of diameter 12 mm and gauge length 60 mm elongates to 75
mm. The rod can sustain a maximum load of 50 kN but yields at 25 kN and breaks at 30 kN. Find its yield
strength, ultimate strength, strength at the point of failure, and actual strength at the point of failure when
the diameter is reduced to 8 mm. Also find the percentage elongation and the percentage reduction in area.
3) In an axial tension test on a mild steel specimen of 12 mm diameter and 60 mm gauge length, the following
data was obtained:
Determine (i) proportionality limit, (ii) yield stress, (iii) ultimate stress, (iv) modulus of elasticity, (v) %
elongation, (vi) % reduction of area, if the gauge length and diameter at failure are 77 mm and 9 mm,
respectively.
4) A hollow steel tube carries an axial compressive load of 140 kN. The yield stress of the specimen is found
to be 250 MPa and the prescribed factor of safety is 1.75. If the outer diameter of the tube is 105 mm, find
out its inner diameter and thickness.
5) A steel wire 2.0 m long and 3 mm in diameter is extended by 0.75 mm when a weight W is suspended from
the wire. If the same weight is suspended from a brass wire, 2.5 m long and 2 mm in diameter, it is elongated
by 4.65 mm. Determine the modulus of elasticity of brass if that of steel is 2.0 × 105 N/mm2.

6) An axial pull of 50 kN is acting on a bar consisting of different cross-sections as shown in the figure below.
Determine (i) the stresses in each section and (ii) the total extension of the bar. Assume E = 200 kN/mm2.
7) A prismatic bar of 10 mm diameter is subjected to various axial forces as shown in the figure below. Find
the total change in the length of the bar. Take E = 250 kN/mm2.
8) A circular rod of diameter 25 mm and length 1.2 m is subjected to a tensile force of 30 kN. The increase in
length of the rod is 0.25 mm and the decrease in diameter is 0.002 mm. Calculate Poisson’s ratio and the
three elastic constants.
9) A steel rectangular bar of length 300 mm having cross-sectional dimensions 25 mm wide by 50 mm deep,
is subjected to forces as shown in the figure below. If Poisson’s ratio is 0.25 and Young’s modulus is 200
GPa, determine:
(i) the change in dimensions,
(ii) the change in volume, and
(iii) bulk modulus and modulus of rigidity.
10) Two wooden pieces 10 cm × 10 cm in cross-section are glued together along line AB as shown in the
adjoining figure. What maximum axial force P can be applied if the allowable shearing stress along AB is
1.2 N/mm2?

11) A rectangular bar of a cross-sectional area of 11000 mm2 is subjected to a tensile load P as shown in the
adjoining figure. The permissible normal and shear stresses on the oblique plane BC are given as 7 N/mm2
and 3.5 N/mm2 respectively. Determine the safe value of P.
12) Three bars made of aluminium, zinc, and copper are of equal length and have cross-sections of 900 mm2,
700 mm2, and 500 mm2 respectively. They are rigidly connected at their ends (see figure below). If this
compound member is subjected to a longitudinal pull of 400 kN, estimate the proportion of the load carried
by each rod and the induced stresses. Assume the values of elasticity modulus, E for aluminium = 0.9 × 105
N/mm2, for zinc = 1.1 × 105 N/mm2, and for copper = 1.4 × 105 N/mm2.
13) Three wires of the same material and cross-section support a rigid bar which further supports a weight of 5
kN. The length of the wires is 5.0 m, 8.0 m, and 6.0 m respectively (see figure below). The spacing between
the wires is 2.0 m and the weight acts at 1.6 m from the first wire. Determine the load carried by each wire.

14) A rigid horizontal bar AB hinged at A is supported by a 1.2 m long steel rod and a 2.4 m long bronze rod,
both rigidly fixed at the upper ends (see figure below). A load of 48 kN is applied at a point that is 3.2 m
from the hinge point A. The areas of cross-section of the steel and bronze rods are 850 mm2 and 650 mm2
respectively. Assuming the values of elasticity modulus, E for steel = 205 GPa and bronze = 82 GPa, find
(i) the stress in each rod,
(ii) the reaction at the pivot point.
15) A composite bar is fixed between two supports (see figure below). If the temperature of the bar is raised
from 25°C to 75°C, find the stresses induced in each rod by assuming (i) if the supports do not yield, and
(ii) if the supports yield by 0.25 mm.
16) A composite bar is fixed between two supports (see figure below). If the temperature of the bar is raised
from 25°C to 75°C, find the stresses induced in each rod by assuming (i) if the supports do not yield, and
(ii) if the supports yield by 0.25 mm.

an axial force of 150 kN, determine the average normal stress in the concrete and in each rod. Each rod has
a diameter of 20 mm. Take Est = 200 GPa and Econ = 29 GPa.
