Classroom Management Plan 2024-2025

Dance II, Trimester 2 Tap

Course Outline, Procedures and Policies

Introduction
Welcome to back to dance class at BCA! To have a successful learning
experience I have outlined a few procedures to follow, responsibilities for
dancers and grading information. Students should approach this class with an
attentive and open attitude, and a willingness to perform and develop stage
presence. Dance is the language of movement, the more it is practiced, the
more fluent one becomes. Each student brings their own level of prior
knowledge and skill, so, if there are 14 students in the class, there are 14
different levels of training, each student should work at their own level. As
always, if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me via
email, eboedw@bergen.org. I look forward to teaching you and watching you
grow. Here’s to a successful year with you at BCA!

Full Year Course

The tap dance unit will further introduce students to the rhythm and style of
tap dance and its use on the Broadway stage. Classes will begin with a
structured tap warm-up and will progress to across the floor exercises and
then finally, to tap combinations. Students will increase their knowledge of tap
dance vocabulary and tap dance steps. In addition, students will also learn
progressions of tap steps such as the progression of a shuffle, scuffle and riffle.
Along with tap technique, students will also focus on musicality. Techniques
learned from previous ballet and jazz classes will be employed in the
execution of tap turns and choreography. During class, there will be
opportunities for improvisation and personal practice time.
Content:
1. The class warm-up: Toe taps and heel drops, shuffle exercise, and
cramp roll exercise strengthen your feet, ankles, and legs, as well as
sharpen your rhythm.
2. Across the floor progression exercises: A variety of skills from toe
heels, maxi ford turns, draw backs, pullbacks, to grab offs and more.
3. Class performance assessment: The Shim Sham Shimmy combination
and other tap combos will be rehearsed and performed as well as a
vocabulary quiz.
4. Homework: Students will be assigned journals, video assignments and
dance career projects.

Grading Procedures
Daily Participation (30-40%)
● The teacher will observe students on focus, concentration, musicality
and commitment in the warm-up and class activities. You will be given
feedback on your progress in class to help you grow in technique and
performance.
● Attendance and practice are important for a dancer. Four absences per
trimester will lead to a 10% reduction in the Participation grade. More
than four absences will lead to additional points subtracted.
● Dance attire - Please bring your tap shoes for dance class.
○ Acceptable dance attire – leggings, sweatpants/joggers, shorts,
comfortable/moveable clothing
○ Unacceptable dance attire - crop tops, jeans, dresses without
shorts
● When you enter the space, place your backpack, phone, personal
belongings on your assigned spot, change your shoes and report to your
designated spot on the floor.
● A class CUT will result in an automatic 4-point deduction from the
Participation grade. You may not make up a test during a dance class,
that is considered a CUT.
● If you are injured, a note from a doctor is needed in order to sit out
during class. In addition, an observation form will be written during
class and emailed to Ms. Edwards.
● Important- Please remember to check Schoology or emails, if needed,
for unexpected location changes.
● No food, drinks, chewing gum or hats are allowed in class, only water is
allowed.
● If absent, please reach out to a classmate for help on material that was
covered. Due to the repetitive nature of dance class, material will be
reviewed, and, in addition, instructional videos will be posted, and I will
be available for extra help.
● Please remember to respect your classmates, school property, and the
teacher.

Professionalism (5-10%)
● Please be on time, dressed, and ready to work when entering the space.
● Points will be deducted from the Professionalism grade for
unprofessional behavior such as rudeness, incessant talking, tardiness,
and not having the proper dance attire or shoes.
● Punctuality - If you are tardy, please have a late pass. Points will be
deducted from the Professionalism grade for excessive tardiness and
parents will be notified for excessive absences or tardiness.

Performance Assessments, Quizzes, Projects (30-50%)

Skill Level Progress Assessment on warm-up exercises
● Students will be assessed on their understanding of genre specific
technique while performing the warmup exercises learned in class.
Vocabulary quizzes
● Students will be quizzed on genre specific vocabulary. A study guide will
be provided.
Technical Proficiency Combinations
● Students will be assessed on the choreography learned in class.

Homework (30-40%)
● All work is expected on the due date. The penalty for a late submission is
a 10% deduction for each calendar day late. (The calendar day begins
immediately after the assignment is due). After seven days, you will get
a 0 on the assignment. Note that it is better to get a 0 and turn in the
assignment than it is to get a 0 and fail to turn it in. Written work
submitted follows the district guidelines for cheating and plagiarism.
● Journals
● Dance Video Analysis
○ Students view dance performance or instructional videos and
write about the content. Questions about the videos may appear
on a quiz.
