INFORMATION SHEET
NAME OF ITI: GOVT: ITI FOR WOMEN, KANNUR.
NAME: NIDHISREE P V TRADE: ICTSM
OUT COME NO: LESSON NO: 25 DATE: 16/10/2024 TIME: 45 Min

TITLE: MONITOR

At the end of this lesson, trainees shall be able to:

Explain monitors.
Explain Types of monitors and its resolution
DESCRIPTION
MONITOR
The function of a monitor is to produce visual responses to user requests. Earlier desktop computers
used cathode ray tube (CRT) monitors. CRTs use an electron gun to activate phosphors behind the
screen. Each dot on the monitor, called a pixel, has the ability to generate red, green, or blue, depending
on the signals it receives. This combination of colours results in the total display you see on the
monitor.
Monitor Higher resolutions display more pixels and have better visual output Lower resolutions result
in grainy displays.
MONOCHROME MONITORS:
Monochrome monitors produce images of one colour. The most popular is amber, followed by white
and green.
COLOUR MONITORS:
Colour monitors use more sophisticated technology than monochrome monitors.
Whereas a monochrome picture tube contains one electron gun, a colour tube contains three guns
arranged in a triangular shape referred to as a delta configuration Instead of amber, white, or green
phosphors, the monitor screen contains phosphor triads, which consist of one red phosphor, one green
phosphor, and one blue phosphor arranged in the same pattern as the electron guns. These three
primary colours can be mixed to produce all other colours.
PIXELS :
In a colour monitor, each picture element (pixel) consists of three red, green, and blue (RGB) sub
pixels. By varying the intensity of each of the sub pixels, can cause the overall colour and brightness of
the pixel to be anything from black (all off) to white (all on) and almost any colour or level in between.
The physical geometry of the RGB sub pixels varies depending on the type of display, but the shape is
normally either rectangular stripes or round dots. CLCD monitors normally have the three sub pixels
arranged as rectangular vertical stripes in a linear repeating arrangement.
Pixel pitch is also sometimes called dot pitch.

RESOLUTION:
Resolution indicates the amount of detail a monitor can render. This quantity is expressed in the
number of horizontal and vertical picture elements, or pixels, contained in the screen.
TYPES OF MONITORS
1. CGA monitors
Colour graphics adapter (CGA) monitors are an older type and can display combinations of red, green,
and blue at different intensities, resulting in 16 different colours.
2. EGA monitors
Enhanced graphics adapter (EGA) monitors are capable of generating up to 64 colours, of which 16
can be displayed at any one time.
3. VGA monitor
Virtual graphics array (VGA) monitors were the first to use analogue rather than digital output. Instead
of creating displays based on the absence or presence of a colour.
4. SVGA monitor
Super VGA monitor introduce yet another improvement. They also use analogue input and can provide
resolution as high.
