"Who" Jesus Is

From the New Testament we learn of the

many titles of Jesus, among them Risen
Lord, Messiah, Servant, Son of Man, Son of
God, High Priest and Prophet. All these
titles present a faith vision of Jesus while
seeking to unravel, to some extent, the
mystery that surrounds Him. Colossians 1
states that Christ is the first born of all
Creation, before all else; in Him and for Him
all things have been created and held
together. This Christ-in-Himself image was
developed in the early Church and was
enshrined in the ancient Creeds. (cf. NCDP,
186)This Christ-in-Himself image cannot be
separated from the Jesus-for-us image
developed in the New Testament. These two
creeds are indispensable guidelines for our
catechesis today (cf. NCDP, 186) as they
fulfill our present needs and yearnings.

Thus, we have the following images of

Jesus (cf. NCDP, 187):

Jesus as liberator, not only for the individual

believer in his private life but also on the
structural level of society (cf. Lk 1:68-79)
Jesus as teacher who interprets our personal
and social experience with His parables and
proverbs Jesus, our brother who is like us in
all things except sin Jesus, the ruler-king
who is the foundation of all legitimate
authority in Church and society Jesus, the
Holy One of God who draws us into
authentic prayer before God our Father,
through His indwelling Spirit

union
