F Reading: Using text structure to find information

Read the article about fast fashion and choose the correct answer.

The true cost of new clothes

It is always a pleasure to buy clothes, and the fashion industry encourages us to buy more and
more often. Fashions change every season and, if you want to keep looking cool, you need to
update your wardrobe regularly. You don’t have to spend much money, as companies produce
clothing quickly and cheaply – it’s called fast fashion. But while the price may be right in the shop,
there are other reasons to think twice before buying.

Cheap materials and hidden costs

Clothes are made with artificial or natural materials. Artificial materials like polyester are cheap,
but bad for the environment. Cotton, however, is a plant, and will not damage the environment.
It’s strong, cheap to produce and one of the most common materials used in the fast fashion
industry. However, cotton plants need a lot of water to grow – in fact, around 2,700 litres for the
average T-shirt. Most cotton growers also use large amounts of chemicals that have an impact on
the environment, as well as on the health of farm workers.

Making and destroying

Turning chemicals or cotton into fabrics and fabrics into clothes happen in factories that use
machines. Machines need electricity, and not many industries use renewable energy. Then there
are the chemicals used for dyeing fabrics to make them the right colour. So polluting gases from
burning coal go into the atmosphere, and substances used to colour materials often end up in
rivers and lakes.

What we pay after we’ve paid
The hidden costs don’t stop when clothes reach the customer. Materials are made from oil and
when washed, they lose tiny pieces of plastic. Around 500,000 tons of these tiny pieces enter our
oceans every year. Eighty-five per cent of the clothes we buy end up as rubbish.

Some tips to change this

Fast fashion is the second industry that causes the most pollution in the world after oil. So, what
can you do to refresh your wardrobe without adding to the problem? Many things. The first is not
to buy more than you need. Another one is swapping clothes with your friends. You can also buy
second-hand clothes and sell your own or give them to charity shops. Lastly, you can rent clothes
instead of buying them. All these options mean you can still change your wardrobe regularly, but
make fast fashion slow for the planet.

I Speaking: Mediation
You have two minutes to read the text and the task. You must then give a talk. You will be
able to refer to the text when giving your talk. Your talk should last 60 seconds.
Your friend wants to sell some of their old clothes. They are thinking of doing this online. Read the blog,
then:
• recommend ways to sell their clothes
• suggest ways of photographing and describing their clothes
• give them advice about deciding the price.

Selling clothes online

By Cathy Deane
Do you have a lot of old clothes to sell? Are you thinking of trying to sell them online? Taking a
moment to follow these key tips will make sure that the right customers find you, and that you
get the best price for your stuff!

Audience
Choose the right place to advertise your clothes. Use an online marketplace for everyday items. If
you’ve got something special to sell, why not consider posting about it on social media? Be
careful, though! Check first which social media platforms allow direct selling!

Photos and videos

Photograph your clothes in the best possible condition, in the best possible light. Clean them, iron
them and try to use a digital camera to take the photo instead of your phone. If you’re posting on
social media, try to create a ‘story’ around your items. Be creative with your photos, or make a
video.

Descriptions
Customers who buy online want to know all the details before they buy! Describe the condition,
the size and the material of each item. If an item isn’t perfect, be honest about it. Include photos
of anything that’s wrong with it so that your customers know what they’re buying. You don’t want
them to return the clothes and give you negative reviews.

Prices
Take some time to look at similar items that other people are selling. Match their prices or, if you
want to sell your item quickly, make your customers a great offer!
