SCHOOL OF
LIBRARY &
INFORMATION
SCIENCE
Library and information science is accredited
by UGC as the name implies, a combination of
two fields: i) library science; and, ii)information
science. The joint term is associated with schools
of library and information science (SLIS).
Library technique is a common term for the
methods used for organizing, cataloging, use,
and administration of a library. India has had a
rich literary tradition, with education
andresearch as its pillars. Dr. S. Radhakrishan,
former president of India said, “In the old days
teachers of India were themselves librarians and
they held the highest esteem”. Information has
always played an important role in the growth of
the human civilization from the primitive days. It
also leads to the development of economic,
political, social, occupational, cultural, and many
other sectors of human society. But at the same ACADEMIC PROGRAMME
time, it is important to realize that not all
information is equally relevant for everybody. In Bachelor of Library & Information Science (B.Lib.I.Sc) - 1 Year
the modern age, there are various channel of
information, hence, it becomes essential to Master of Library & Information Science (M.Lib.I.Sc) - 1 Year
identify which source of information is authentic
and which is inauthentic, for that, the librarian
and the library staff plays a dynamic role. It is
often said, “A library is a trinity made up of
books, readers, and the staff”. Out of these three
components, books and staff are important for
providing services to the reader, who is the third
component of the trinity. An efficient
management of libraries is important to achieve
the societal and educational goals of a library. In
order to provide better services to the users,
another factor that needs to be considered is the
human resource management.
Library science is an interdisciplinary or multi
disciplinary field that applies the practices,
perspectives, and tools of management,
information technology, education, and other
areas to libraries; the collection, organization,
preservation, and dissemination of information
resources; and the political economy of
information.
