DIMENSIONS OF DEVELOPMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainable development is the idea that human societies must live and meet their needs
without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. ...

Sustainability is a broad term that describes managing resources without depleting them for future
generations. ... Sustainable development describes the processes for improving long-term economic
well-being and quality of life without compromising future generations' ability to meet their needs.

“Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

Main difference between development and sustainable development is that development aims at
raising the quality of life of only present generation whereas sustainable
development aims at raising the quality of life of both present and future generations
without threatening natural endowment and environment.

There are four dimensions to sustainable development – society, environment,

culture and economy – which are intertwined, not separate. Sustainability is a
paradigm for thinking about the future in which environmental, societal and
economic considerations are balanced in the pursuit of an improved quality of life
COURSE MODULE
 Society - community or group of people having common traditions,
institutions, and interests

 Environment simply means 'surroundings'

 the aggregate of surrounding things, conditions, or influences; surroundings
 Culture- customs, arts, social institutions, and achievements of a particular
nation, people, or other social group.

 Economy - large set of inter-related production and consumption

activities that aid in determining how scarce resources are allocated. In
an economy, the production and consumption of goods and services are
used to fulfill the needs of those living and operating within it.

Three main pillars: economic, environmental, and social

 Economic sustainability refers to practices that support long-term

economic growth without negatively impacting social, environmental, and
cultural aspects of the community.
- means that the public sector in particular will provide support to
occupations and sectors that create a better environment and a better sense
of well-being.
Examples could be organic farming, green and socio-economic enterprises, etc.

Environmental sustainability is defined as responsible interaction with the

environment to avoid depletion or degradation of natural resources and allow
for long-term environmental quality.
 means that we are living within the means of our natural resources.
 the responsibility to conserve natural resources and protect global
ecosystems to support health and well-being, now and in the future.

Environmental Sustainability Examples

 Renewable energy, such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, and biomass
 Recycling of metals, such as iron and steel, and minerals
 Crop rotation
 Cover crops
 Selective logging

Sustainability improves the quality of our lives, protects our ecosystem

and preserves natural resources for future generations. ... Going green and
sustainable is not only beneficial for the company; it also maximizes the
benefits from an environmental focus in the long-term.

According to Foundry, those six key factors are: optimize your current use of
fossil fuels, eliminate waste, recycle, recover energy, save time, and reduce,
or eliminate, pollution.
How to live a more sustainable lifestyle
 Save energy. By using less energy, you can help to reduce carbon
emissions. ...
 Eat less meat. ...
 Use reusable alternatives. ...
 Go paperless. ...
 Use renewable energy. ...
COURSE MODULE
 Recycle and reuse. ...
 Grow your own produce. ...
 Donate unused items

Polluted land, air, and water will severely affect our quality of life and the ability of
local communities and the larger society to thrive. In short, environmental
sustainability is fundamental to the survival of our planet and ourselves.

Five key drivers of sustainability: social impact, focused business strategy,

economic viability, adaptability, and capacity to deliver.

 Social sustainability is a process for creating sustainable successful

places that promote wellbeing, by understanding what people need from
the places they live and work.
 Social sustainability is the ability of society, or any social system, to
persistently achieve a good social well being.

Three main pillars of social sustainability: inclusion, empowerment, and

resilience.

Inclusion focuses on the need to “put people first” in development processes.

For example, in relieving poverty or sickness or the needs of old age, an
organization might concentrate on building the capacity of people in poverty
(or people who are sick or old) to enable them to be included in society as a
means of relieving their needs and promoting social inclusion.
Social empowerment is understood as the process of developing a sense of
autonomy and self-confidence, and acting individually and collectively to change
social relationships and the institutions and discourses that exclude poor people and
keep them in poverty.
 Social-Economic Empowerment: Examples. ... Educating girls, teaching
women employable skills, and teaching them about their rights as human
beings all have the potential to impact the social-economic conditions in the
communities they live in.
Resilience is “the capacity of a system, be it an individual, a forest, a city or an
economy, to deal with change and continue to develop.” The definition of
sustainability is “the ability to meet the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Examples:
Core to social resilience, then, is an inclusion of diverse others, an acceptance
and attention to others, mutual respect and care for others, and a responsiveness to
others. A simple touch can provide connection and promote cohesion.

Social sustainability (Schools)

 On a social sustainability level, we respect people. For example in our
teaching and research, we allow and instigate discussions that expose
ourselves and students to diverse viewpoints. We accept all staff and
students by being inclusive.
