Literature Review:
In recent years, the domain of fall detection systems has experienced a surge in research activity, with
researchers worldwide engaging in diverse methodologies and innovations aimed at addressing the critical
challenge of fall detection. This section embarks on a journey through these studies, shedding light on their
contributions and illustrating the evolving landscape of fall detection technology.
Our journey commences with foundational research conducted by Villaseñor and colleagues in
2019 [4]. They provided a significant resource in the form of a multimodal dataset, serving as the
cornerstone for subsequent studies. This dataset established a benchmark for evaluating the
effectiveness of various fall detection systems. Complementing this dataset, Trkov et al. (2015)
introduced a novel slip detection and prediction scheme employing wearable Inertial Measurement
Units (IMUs) and extended Kalman filters, emphasizing the pivotal role of wearable technology in
enhancing fall detection [6].
As we delve deeper into the research landscape, we encounter the work of Nooruddin et al. (2021),
who conducted a systematic review categorizing fall detection solutions into single and multiple
sensor-based systems [1]. Beddiar and colleagues (2021) take a prominent position with their
emphasis on video-based fall detection, leveraging machine learning and pose estimation
techniques for precise classification [2]. Inturi and co-authors (2022) introduce a vision-based
approach employing AlphaPose for key point detection, emphasizing its potential for in-home fall
detection [3]. Wu et al. (2023) present an innovative weakly supervised learning-based dual-modal
network, promising improved efficiency and accuracy in fall detection [5]. These studies
collectively reflect the persistent pursuit of enhanced detection algorithms and their potential for
real-world applications.
Transitioning to the second phase of our journey, we explore recent international contributions to the field
and broaden our perspective to encompass the broader implications of fall detection technology for safety
and health.
Phand and team (2023) have harnessed the capabilities of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN)
for human fall detection through visual surveillance, illustrating the global adoption of advanced
machine learning techniques [7]. Liao et al. (2011) propose a method incorporating the Integrated
Spatiotemporal Energy (ISTE) map and Bayesian Belief Networks (BBN) for effective fall and slip
detection, emphasizing the importance of incorporating both spatial and temporal information in
detection algorithms [8]. Trkov and colleagues (2019) introduce an innovative inertial sensor-based
slip detection system for human walking, showcasing potential safety improvements [9]. Mobsite
et al. (2023) pioneer a camera-based system that respects privacy concerns by utilizing human
silhouettes, highlighting the importance of addressing ethical and privacy considerations in system
design [10].

Our journey takes us to researchers who have developed an affordable motion-based method
utilizing pyroelectric infrared sensors (PIR) and Arduino technology for accurate fall detection
[11]. This work serves as a reminder of the necessity for cost-effective solutions that can be
deployed in resource-constrained settings. Shifting to a broader perspective on safety and health,
we explore the meta-analyses conducted by Burke et al. (2006) and Christian et al. (2009), which
emphasize the effectiveness of behavioral modeling, safety knowledge, and motivation in safety
performance [16,17]. These studies offer valuable insights into the human factors that complement
technological advancements in fall detection
Returning to the international stage, researchers employ artificial intelligence and computer vision
for accident rate reduction, addressing challenges posed by low lighting conditions. This work
extends the application of computer vision beyond fall detection, showcasing its potential for
broader safety improvements. Our journey culminates in a scoping review that underscores the
transformative potential of AI in occupational safety and health across high-risk industries. It also
acknowledges the surveillance concerns associated with certain AI applications, highlighting the
ethical considerations that must accompany technological advancements. In Europe, researchers
conduct a literature review and expert interviews, emphasizing the need for safe and transparent
Artificial Intelligence for Workplace Management (AIWM) systems to address occupational safety
and health risks. This perspective broadens our understanding of the role of AI in shaping the future
of workplace safety.
In conclusion, our journey through these research papers reveals a rich tapestry of innovation, collaboration,
and exploration. The field of fall detection systems is continuously evolving, with researchers from diverse
backgrounds contributing to its advancement. From wearable sensors to computer vision, from machine
learning to human factors, these studies collectively paint a picture of a field poised to make significant
strides in improving safety and health across the globe.
