The Slope of the Regression Line and the Correlation Coefficient
The reason for the connection between the value of r and the slope of the least squares
line has to do with the formula that gives us the slope of this line.

For paired data (x, y) we denote the standard deviation of the x data by Sx and the
standard deviation of the y data by Sy.

The formula for the slope an of the regression line is: 𝑏=𝑟

Example:

Given the following data:

 Coefficient of correlation between (X & Y) is (0.9).

 The standard deviation of X is (4), and the standard deviation of Y is (2.5).

 The mean of X is 12 and the mean of Y is 8.

Required:

1) Find the regression equation of Y on X.

2) Estimate the value of ŷ if the value of X is 22.

Solution:
1) r = 0.9, Sx = 4, Sy = 2.5, 𝑥 = 12, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑦 = 8
.
𝑏=𝑟 = 0.9 = 0.5625

𝑎 = 𝑦 − 𝑏𝑥 = 8 - 0.5625 (12) = 1.25

ŷ = a + bx
ŷ = 1.25 + 0.5625x
2) Let X = 22, then ŷ = 1.25 + 0.5625(22) = 13.625
