DIRECT AND INDIRECT SPEECH


 Direct Speech- is the reporting of speech by repeating the actual words of a speaker.
 For example, “I'm going,” she said.
 Indirect Speech- is a speech which tells you what someone said, but does not use the
person's actual words.
 For example, 'They said you didn't like it', 'I asked her what her plans were', and '
Citizens complained about the smoke'.
Examples of Direct and Indirect Speech
 Direct speech: "I am tired," said Jane.
 Indirect speech: Jane said that she was tired.

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT:
Activity: Identify if the following sentences below is direct or indirect speech. If a sentence is
direct speech, the student will show a happy face, and if it is indirect speech, the student will
show a sad face.
 Please don't be late.
 He asked their not to be late.
 I'm living in Texas now.
 Her father said that he was living in London now.
 I am living in Paris.
 He said that he was living in Paris.
 My dog is sick.
 She said that her mother wasn't very well.
 Mariel said that she needs help with her homework.
 George said "I need help with my homework."
 He said he had been walking along the street.
Activity: Convert the following direct speech to indirect speech.
 "I am tired," said Phoebe.
 "I love playing the guitar," said Mariel.
 "I have a headache," complained Joey.
 "Let's go out for dinner," suggested Anna.
 "I'm sorry for being late," apologized Peter.
 "Have you seen my keys?" he asked.
 "Let's go to the park," they suggested.
 "I will call you later," he promised.
 "I don't want to go," she said.
 Jane asked, "Do you like pizza?"
 David stated, "I love chocolate ice cream."
 Mary shouted, "I won the lottery!"

Activity: Convert the following indirect speech into direct speech.


 Michael said that he played football.
 Mario said that he was cutting a tree.
 Leo said that he had eaten a banana.
 Jan said that he had driven a car.
 He said that he need to go.
 Ivan said that he would go to the gym with Phoebe.
 Jelo said that he would carry the bag of Mariel.
 Janna said that he could help.
 Dem said that she should read a book.
 Kristle said that she might go to market.
