RACE ISSUES IN THE WORKPLACE DIVERSITY

Group 8 Members:
Delos Santos, Marynor
Jiao, Iverson

 What are race issues?

o Race issues refer to the various social, economic, and political challenges
arising from racial disparities, discrimination, prejudice, and unequal
treatment based on perceived racial or ethnic differences.

 What does the race issue in the workplace mean?

o Race issues in the workplace specifically refer to challenges, conflicts, and
inequalities related to race or ethnicity that occur within the context of
employment and organizational settings.

Race issues in the workplace

1. Discrimination in Hiring and Promotion
 This occurs when qualified candidates are overlooked for jobs or
promotions based on their race rather than their skills and experience. It
can manifest through biased recruitment practices or unfair evaluation
criteria.
2. Unequal Treatment
 This refers to employees of different races being treated differently in
terms of workload, opportunities, evaluations, and discipline. Such
treatment can affect job satisfaction, performance, and career
progression.
3. Lack of Diversity
 This issue arises when there is a significant underrepresentation of certain
racial groups within a company. A homogenous workforce can lead to a
lack of diverse perspectives and innovation, and it often reflects broader
systemic biases in recruitment and retention practices.
4. Cultural Insensitivity
 This involves a lack of respect or awareness for the cultural differences of
employees from various racial backgrounds. It can result in inappropriate
comments, stereotyping, or policies that do not consider diverse cultural
needs and practices.
5. Racial Harassment
 This includes hostile or offensive behavior towards employees based on
their race. It can take many forms, such as racial slurs, jokes, or exclusion,
creating a toxic and unwelcoming work environment.
 What is the apartheid era in South African history?
o The apartheid era in South African history refers to the time that the
National Party led the country’s white minority government, from
1948 to 1994. Apartheid (Afrikaans: “apartness”) was the name that
the party gave to its racial segregation policies, which built upon the
country’s history of racial segregation between the ruling white
minority and the nonwhite majority.

What are the Philippines' current racism problem?

1. Colorism
 In the Philippines, lighter skin is often perceived as more attractive and is
associated with higher social status. This preference leads to
discrimination against individuals with darker skin tones, who may face
social and professional disadvantages.

2. Discrimination against Indigenous Peoples

 Indigenous communities, such as the Lumad and Aeta, often experience
marginalization and lack access to basic services, education, and
employment opportunities. They are frequently subject to land
dispossession and are underrepresented in political and social spheres.

3. Prejudice based on Ethnicity and Regional Identity

 People from certain regions, particularly the Muslim-majority areas like
Mindanao, often face stereotypes and prejudice. This can result in social
exclusion and unequal treatment in various aspects of life, including
employment and education.

4. Xenophobia and Discrimination against Foreign Nationals

 Foreign nationals, particularly from countries such as China and African
nations, may experience negative stereotypes, social exclusion, and unfair
treatment. This can manifest in verbal abuse, unequal job opportunities,
and discrimination in public and private services.

Millennials and Racism

 A majority of millennials believe we are at a tipping point on key societal issues
such as inequality and discrimination.

 One in five millennials feel discriminated against all of the time or frequently
because of an aspect of their background.
 Approximately 40% do not feel their employers have done enough to support
their mental well-being during the pandemic.

How to overcome racial discrimination at work?

 Overcoming racial discrimination in the workplace is a challenging and
continuous process that demands consistent dedication and perseverance.
Through enhancing our understanding, encouraging transparent discussions,
enacting impactful policies, and ensuring responsibility for our actions, we have
the potential to establish work environments that genuinely embrace diversity
and fairness. Collaboratively, we can strive towards a future where every person
is appreciated, honored, and enabled to achieve success, irrespective of their
racial or ethnic background.

Laws That Protect You Against Racism

1. Presidential Decree No. 966
 International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial
Discrimination
 It declares organizations, as well as organized propaganda activities, that
promote and incite racial discrimination as illegal and deemed prohibited.

the indigenous groups such as Ifugao, Bontoc, Kankanay, Ibaloi, Kalinga,
Tinguian, Isneg, Gaddang, Ilongot, and Negrito.
