Section - A : Reading Skills

Section - C : Literature Text Book
iii. Attempt questions based on specific instructions for each part.

Section A - Reading Skills

1. Read the passage given below:
1. Hiking is a great source of pleasure to us besides being beneficial for health. Once we leave the crowded streets of a
city and go out for a walking tour away from the mad world, we really feel free. The open air has a bracing effect on
the mind. The congestion of the city, the uproar and tumult, the intolerable noise of traffic, the hectic daily routine, all
these are forgotten and the mind is at ease. We then feel like running, leaping, singing and laughing. We travel
merrily mile after mile in the company of friends and associates.
2. Hiking takes us in the midst of nature. The sight of waterfalls, flowers, streams, trees and bushes is pleasing. A
connect is established between us and nature. Various sounds of nature, like the murmur of a brook or the song of a
bird, acquire a new meaning and significance to us.
3. You enjoy the beauty of nature. Minute observations like a snake casting its slough, a mouse peeping out of its hole, a
squirrel leaping about on the branches of a tree, a bird flying past us, all these are noticed and they arouse our
interest. We have no business worries, no fear of the examination, no anxiety about the home. We have leisure to
stand, to walk and talk. It is more thrilling and pleasurable to hike in a mountainous region than in the plains. The
excitement of climbing up to the top of a hill, the adventure of coming down a slope, the grandeur of sunset behind a
mountain - All these sights lend a rare charm and interest to our journey.
4. We walk along a zigzag motor road or cut across a mountain path in search of adventure. We may have bright sunny
weather or might get caught in a shower of rain. We may look below us into the yawning chasm or up at the
mountain peak. The feeling of unlimited freedom makes our hearts leap with joy.
5. Hiking is one of the healthiest sports. It ensures a complete escape from the urgent and busy activities of life and
therefore gives solace to our brain. It regains its lost energy and is able to do twice as much work as before.
6. The fresh air, beautiful mountains, majestic trees, chirping sound of birds make one's mind and soul at peace with
nature.

Based on your understanding of the passage, answer the questions below: (10)
i. (i) Based on the reading and understanding of the above passage, list 2 reasons why hiking is considered beneficial.

2. Read the extract given below:
1. Necessity is indeed the mother of invention. When areas in and around Leh began to experience water shortages, life
didn't grind to a halt. Why? Because a retired civil engineer in the Jammu and Kashmir Government came up with
the idea of artificial glaciers.
2. Ladakh, a cold desert at an altitude of 3,000-3,500 meters above sea level, has a low average annual rainfall rate of
50 mm . Glaciers have always been the only source of water. Agriculture is completely dependent on glacier melt,
unlike the rest of river/monsoon-fed India. But over the years, with increasing effects of climate change, rainfall and
snowfall patterns have been changing, resulting in severe shortage and drought situations. Given the extreme winter
conditions, the window for farming is usually limited to one harvest season.
3. It is located between the natural glacier above and the village below. The one closer to the village and lowest in
altitude melts first, providing water during April-May, the crucial sowing season. Further, layers of ice above melt
with the increasing temperature, thus ensuring continuous supply to the fields. Therefore, farmers have been able to
manage two crops instead of one. It costs about 1,50,000 and above to create a glacier.
4. Fondly called the glacier man, he has designed over 15 artificial glaciers in and around Leh since 1987. In
recognition of his pioneering effort, he was conferred the Padma Shri by The President of India.

5. There are a few basic steps followed while creating an artificial glacier. River or stream water at high altitude is
diverted to a shaded area of the hill, facing north, where the winter sun is blocked by a ridge or a mountain range. At
the start of winter i.e., in November, the diverted water is made to flow on sloping hills facing distribution channels.
Stone embankments are built at regular intervals which impede the flow of water, making shallow pools which
freeze, forming a cascade of ice along the slope. Ice formation continues for 3-4 months resulting in a large
accumulation of ice which is referred to as an 'artificial glacier'.

Based on your understanding of the extract, answer the questions below: (10)

Areas in and around Leh began to experience water shortage but life didn't grind to a halt.

Subject: Concerns Regarding Misbehavior of Auto-Rickshaw Drivers
Dear Editor,
I am writing to express my deep concern about the increasing incidents of misbehaviour by auto-rickshaw drivers in our
city. As a resident of Bhopal, I have witnessed several instances where commuters, especially students like me, face
rudeness and refusal from auto-rickshaw drivers.
It is disheartening to see that these incidents are on the rise, impacting the safety and well-being of citizens. I urge the
concerned authorities to take the necessary steps to address this issue promptly. Perhaps, conducting awareness programs
for auto-rickshaw drivers on appropriate behaviour and customer service could be beneficial.
I believe that our city's reputation and the safety of its residents should be a priority, and I hope that through your
esteemed newspaper, we can draw attention to this matter for a positive change.
Yours sincerely,
Chitra/Chitranjan

5. The bar chart illustrates the download rate per week of ActiveX, Java and Net computer packages over a period of five
weeks. It can clearly be seen that ActiveX was the most popular computer package to download, whilst Net was the least
popular of the three.
To begin, downloads of ActiveX and Java showed similar patterns, with both gradually increasing from week 1 to week
5. However, the purchases of Active X remained significantly higher than that of the other product over this time frame.
In week 1, purchases of ActiveX stood at around 75,000, while those of Java were about 30,000 lower. With the
exception of a slight fall in week 4, downloading of ActiveX kept increasing until it reached a peak in the final week of
just over 120,000. Java downloads also increased at a steady rate, finishing the period at 80,000.
The product that was downloaded the least was Net. This began at slightly under 40,000, and, in contrast to the other two
products, fell over the next two weeks to reach a low of approximately 25,000. It then increased sharply over the
following two weeks to finish at about 50,000, which was well below that of ActiveX.

Loss of Forest Cover in Uttarakhand The chart shows the loss of forest cover in Uttarakhand due to various
development and commercial activities. It can be seen that mining activities have resulted in the largest loss of forest
cover, with 8,760 hectares being impacted. Road construction has also contributed significantly to the loss, with 7,539
hectares being affected. The installation of power distribution lines and hydropower plant projects has resulted in a lesser
loss of forest cover, with 2,332 hectares and 2,295 hectares being impacted respectively. However, various other smaller
activities, such as railway construction, defence work, and building construction, have together resulted in a significant
loss of 20,998 hectares of forest cover. These findings highlight the need for careful planning and implementation of
development and commercial activities in order to minimize their impact on the environment and protect valuable forest
cover.

Who saved me when I had lost all the contacts on the radio with Paris control? Who was the pilot of the black
aeroplane who helped me to land safely without a compass, without the radio and without much fuel? These
questions had been haunting me since past few days but they still remain unsolved puzzle. Even the lady in the
control room couldn't detect any other plane on the stormy night other than the old Dakota on the radar. The
mysterious pilot of the black aeroplane was like God's help sent to me to land safely. I was in real trouble before the
mysterious black aeroplane appeared before me. I was lost and to make things worse my compass became dead.
Gods knows what would have been my condition, had the pilot of the black aeroplane not guided me out of storm
clouds to safety.

Dear kevin
Trust you too are doing well. I am glad to know that you are interested in adopting a pet. Believe me, your life is
going to change absolutely after a pet enters your life.
And adopting an otter is one of the best decisions of your life. I advise you to bring your thought into action at the
earliest. No doubt, otters prove to be the best companions. They demand nothing in turn of their unconditional love
and company they provide you with. I have been living with Mij for several years now. What I want to share with
you today, is that otters are very intelligent and fun-loving animals. The main characteristic of an otter is to extent
and spread every drop of water. Mij loves to juggle with small objects with his paws lying on his back. His favourite
toy is marbles.
If you want you can accompany me to Basra. I am going there the next week. You too, can get an otter from there.
Believe me it will be a great fun.
Waiting for a positive response from your end.
Yours affectionately
Gavin.
11. Answer ANY ONE of the following two questions, in about 100-120 words.
1. To achieve anything in life one needs to put in a lot of effort. Merely reading books on a subject can never make a
person a pro in that field. One can't deny the fact that the more you read, the more you know but if knowledge isn't
put to practice, it never reaps results. It is important to read to enhance one's perspectives, gain knowledge, the
technical know-how and understand the wide opportunities of research or exploration a topic opens. Simultaneously,
a person should involve in observing, thinking, and experimenting with new ideas to reach his goal. One should
implement his observation practically to gain knowledge. Thinking is another aspect to improve one’s creativity and
explore new things. It is equally important to have a never-say-die attitude, the zeal to learn beyond limits, an
inquisitive mind and a strong will to perform to be the best and not be the winner of a prize. Success comes to those
who work hard for it.
2. The thief wanted to rob Anil after gaining his trust. So he made friends with him to have an acquaintance with him
before making him his next victim. Moreover, he needed a place to live in. He started to work for Anil who was a
credulous person. Anil started teaching him how to read and write. One day, Anil brought a bundle of notes. Though
the thief was out of practice and had not robbed anyone for so many days, he stole the money. He planned to go to
Lucknow after stealing the money. However, his inner conscience pricked him on the station and did not allow him to
go. He realised that he wanted to be an educated man. So his heart changed. That's why he returned back and placed
the money back to its place.
