Cloud Storage and Local Storage

The document discusses cloud storage and local storage, defining each and outlining their respective advantages and disadvantages. Cloud storage allows remote access and scalability but poses security risks and requires internet connectivity, while local storage offers immediate access and control but is vulnerable to physical damage and loss. A comparison highlights differences in accessibility, capacity, security, and cost between the two storage methods.

WHAT IS CLOUD STORAGE
A cloud computing model in which data is stored on remote servers
accessed from the internet, or "cloud" and managed, operated and
maintained by a cloud storage service provider.

EXAMPLES OF CLOUD STORAGE

RETURN
ADVANTAGES OF CLOUD STORAGE
1. Accessibility - Access to data from anywhere in the world at any time once you have Internet access.

2. Availability - All your data stored on the cloud will always be there ready for access from any computer.
You don’t have to store your data in a physical form.

3. Cost - Free versions are available for storing small amounts of data. Additional storage is relatively cheap.

4. Cost effectiveness - When you use a cloud storage service provider, you don’t have to own or maintain
any of the hardware or software associated with backup storage.

5. Disaster Recovery - Because cloud storage is a remote backup solution, your data is safe in the event of
an on-site catastrophe. Disaster recovery is also a much faster process, since there’s no physical equipment
involved in getting the files back.

6. Flexibility - Cloud storage systems are highly scalable. You can have as much or as little space as
you need

7. Ease of use – all cloud storage services have desktop folders for Macs and PCs. This allows users
to drag and drop files between the cloud storage and their local storage.
RETURN
DISADVANTAGES OF CLOUD STORAGE
1. Cost - If you want to store a lot of information, you’ll have to pay for more storage.

2. Security - Third-party storage is vulnerable to theft and hardware failure.

3. Accessibility - Cloud storage requires an Internet connection for access.

4. Accessibility - If your bandwidth is not reliable, gaining access to data on your cloud account can
be very slow.

5. Usability – It is much slower than local backups.

6. Software – In order to manipulate your files locally through multiple devices, you need to download
the service on all devices.

RETURN
WHAT IS LOCAL STORAGE
Local storage is a physical data storage device that is used to
store or backup and retrieve digital information.

RETURN
EXAMPLES OF LOCAL STORAGE

External hard drive Flash drive CD/DVD/BLU RAY

Memory card RETURN

ADVANTAGES OF LOCAL STORAGE
1. Accessibility – Your data is at your fingertips and is easily accessible as there is no need for
an Internet connection to access your data.

2. Storage capacity - It comes in a range of sizes to suit your needs.

3. Speed - With on-site backups, speed is not limited by connectivity as the local storage device
is connected directly to your computer. Backing up all of your data to an external hard drive usually
takes a fraction of the time required by cloud storage. After that initial backup, daily updating can be
done in a few minutes.

4. Control - With a local backup solution, you know exactly where your data is, and you retain
complete and total control over who can and cannot access your files.

RETURN
DISADVANTAGES OF LOCAL STORAGE
1. Reliability - External hard drives or CDs can fail or break can be stolen.

2. Accessibility - Data isn’t accessible unless you have the hardware with you.

3. Cost - Its costly.

4. Hardware Failure - Hard drive failures can occur without any warnings due to physical damages,
power failures, mechanical failures or logical issues.

5. Disaster Recovery – Data that is stored locally is much more susceptible to events such as fires,
floods. Local storage can be lost easily.

6. Data safety and security – Local storage can crash at any time resulting in damage or no data.

RETURN
CLOUD STORAGE VS LOCAL STORAGE

Accessibility 1.Local storage - User needs physical access to the computer to which storage is attached.
2. Cloud storage - It can be accessed from any Internet-based computer device.

Capacity 1.Local storage - Storage capacity is determined at the time of purchase, more can be added if
needed.
2.Cloud storage - Users rent as much storage capacity as they need.

Security - hardware 1.Local Storage - It is the owners responsibility to keep it secure . Backups should be done in case the
device fails.
2.Cloud storage - It is the cloud storage supplier’s responsibility to keep secure.

Security - data 1. Local storage - Can be made very secure through passwords and physical security (locks etc.)
2.Cloud storage - Data is encrypted before being sent over the Internet. Greater chance of
unauthorised access.

Cost 1.Local storage - It has an initial purchase cost but there is no ongoing charges.
2.Cloud storage suppliers usually charge a monthly fee per 100GB of storage.
