• Date of Birth: June 19, 1861 (Wednesday) • Time of Birth: Between 11:00 and 12:00 midnight • Place of Birth: Calamba, Laguna • Name of Mother: Teodora Alonso Realonda (The first teacher of Rizal) • Name of Father: Francisco Mercado Rizal (Rizal calls him "a model of father”) • Date of Baptism: June 22, 1861 • Place of Baptism: John the Baptist Parish (a Catholic church in Calamba, Laguna) • Godfather: Father Pedro Casanas (a close friend with Rizal’s parents) • Priest: Father Rufino Collantes

1. Saturnina Mercado (1850 – 1913)
Nickname: Neneng Oldest of the Rizal children. She married Manuel Hidalgo. 2. Paciano Mercado (1851 – 1930) Older brother and confidant of Jose Rizal. The one who influence Rizal to fight for our country’s freedom. After his younger brother’s execution, he joined the Philippine Revolution and became a combat general. 3. Narcisa Mercado (1852-1939) Nickname: Sisa A school teacher of Morong. Married to Antonio Lopez. 4. Olympia Mercado (1855-1887) Nickname: Ypia Telegraph operator from Manila. She married Silvestre Ubaldo. 5. Lucia Mercado (1857-1919) Married to Mariano Herbosa of Calamba, nephew of Father Casanas. Herbosa died of Cholera and was denied Christian burial because of was brother- in-law of Dr. Rizal. 6. Maria Mercado (1859-1945) Nickname: Biang Married to Daniel Faustino Cruz of Binan Laguna. 7. Jose Mercado (1861-1896) Nickname: Pepe He lived with Josephine Bracken during his exile in Dapitan. He had a son by her, whom he named “Francisco," but died a few hours after birth. 8. Concepcion Mercado (1862-1865) Nickname: Concha Died because of sickness at the age of 3. 9. Josefa Mercado (1865-1945) Nickname: Panggoy She died an old maid at the age of 80. 10. Trinidad Mercado (1868-1951) Nickname: Trining She died also an old maid at the age of 83. 11. Soledad Mercado (1870-1929) Nickname: Choleng Youngest She married Pantaleon Quintero of Calamba.
LESSON 07: RIZAL’S CHILDHOOD MEMORIES
A. Earliest Childhood Memories
− The first memory of Rizal, in his infancy, was his happy days in the family garden. He was 3 years old. − Because he was frail, sickly and undersized child, he was given the tenderest care of his parents. His parents employed an “aya” (nurse maid) to look after his comfort. − Another childhood memory was the daily Angelus prayer. His mother gathered all her children at the house to pray the Angelus. B. The Hero’s First Sorrow − The death of Concha brought Rizal his first sorrow. He was 4 years old. C. Devoted Son of the Church − He begun to join religious activities in the church like Catholic prayers, processions and novenas. At the age of 3. − he was able to read the Spanish bible with the help of his mother. At the age of 5. D. First Poem by Rizal − Sa Aking Mga Kababata (To my Fellow Children) It was believed to be written by Rizal at the age of 8. E. Calamba, the Hero’s Hometown − Un Recuerdo A Mi Pueblo (In Memory of my Town) A poem written by Rizal at the age of 15 as he remembered his beloved hometown.
