1.0 INTRODUCTION
In these questions a series is given. The only thing to be understood for solving these questions is the
pattern, on which a particular series is based. A series can be formed by using various methods.
Some of the methods are given below.
2.0 COMPLETION OF SERIES
In such type of questions a series is given and we have to find out the missing term. Some of the
logics that can be applied to solve such questions are :
2.1 Series based on difference
1 3 7 13 21
+2 +6
We can see that the differences of given terms are consecutive even numbers
21 + 10 = 31
The next term is 31
So, The answer is (B).
20 19 17 14 10 5
–1 –3 –5
17 – 3 = 14
So, The answer is (C).
13
Class IX : MAT
4 5 9 18 34
+1 +9
As we can see that the differences are squares of consecutive numbers.
The next difference will be 25
34 + 25 = 59
The answer is (D)
Illustration 5. 1, 3, 3, 6, 7, 9, ?, 12, 21
(A) 10 (B) 11 (C) 12 (D) 13
Solution. This series can be divided into 2 series
(I) 1, 3, 7, ?, 21 (II) 3, 6, 9, 12
In series (I) differences are
In series (II) differences are
+4 +8 +3
1 3 7 ? 21 3 6 9 12
+2 +6 +3 +3
7 + 6 = 13
The answer is (D)
Illustration 6. 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, ?, 17
(A) 12 (B) 13 (C) 14 (D) 15
Solution. This is a series of prime numbers, so the prime number after 11 is 13.
Answer is (B)
72 × 5 = 360 6 18
3 72
The answer is (C)
×2 ×4
14
Series
2 5 9 19 37
×2+1 ×2+1
37 × 2 + 1 = 75
The answer is (D)
Illustration 9. 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, ?, 34
(A) 20 (B) 21 (C) 22 (D) 24
Solution. In this series
rd nd st
3 number = 2 number + 1 number
th rd nd
4 number = 3 number + 2 number
th th rd
5 number = 4 number + 3 number.
and so on
8 + 13 = 21
The answer is (B)
2 5 10 17 26 37 50 64
+3 +7 +11 +14
As we can see that the difference between the terms are consecutive odd numbers.
But after 13 difference of 14 is given, which is not odd. So the wrong term is 64.
The answer is (D).

Illustration 12. H, I, K, N, ?
(A) O (B) Q (C) R (D) S
Solution. Observe the series
1 2 3 4
H I K N R
Hence the correct choice is (C).
A B D G K
+1 +2 +3 +4
2nd letter
Y V R M G
–3 –4 –5 –6
3rd letter
D F H J L
+2 +2 +2 +2
The correct choice is (B).
2 4 12 ?
×2 ×3 ×4
Middle letter
16
Series
A D G ?
+3 +3 +3
3rd number
11 13 17 ?
+2 +4 +6
Hence the answer is (D).
1. The letters may be arranged in cyclic order to form a group and then repeated to form a series.
2. The letters may be in a series which may be formed by repeating some letters in a group.
3. The letter series may be formed by repeating the same group of letters, skipping one and
repeating another.
4. The letter series may be formed by simply repeating the same group of letters, skipping one
letter in turn, in cyclic order.
Now some of the above cases are discussed by taking some examples.
TYPE-I
Illustration 15. _ b c a _ c a _ c a _ c a _ _
(A) a a b b a c (B) a b b b b c (C) a a b c a c (D) a a b b c c
Solution. We have to select one of the alternative from the four given alternatives. The choice
should be such that when the letters are placed in blanks of the series, we may get a
series, the letters of which are in a sequential form. Hence the choice (B) fits in, and the
series becomes
abcabcabcabcabc
Here a b c is represented and so the answer is (B).
Illustration 16. _ m _ l _ l _ ml _ m_
(A) l l m l l l (B) m l m l l m (C) l l m l l m (D) m l m l m m
D\Allen-Junior wing\MAT\2020-21\IX\Series.p65
Solution. Normally when there are only two letters in a series, these letters are repeated in a
group. The answer is obviously (A). When these letters are placed in the series, we get
a series of the type
lmllmllmllml
17
Class IX : MAT
Solution. Here the first cycle is a b c, the second cycle is the reverse of the first i.e, c b a. Next
cycle is b c a and then its reverse. So the series this way becomes a b c c b a b c a a cb
Illustration 18. a _ c a c _ c _ b _ c a _ _ b
_2__32_12______
Find the last five numbers of the number series
(A) 3 2 1 3 2 (B) 3 1 2 3 2 (C) 3 3 2 1 2 (D) 3 1 2 2 3
Solution. We can observe that c stands for 3 and b for 2. Consequently a stands for 1. The
pattern followed by the letter series is a b c a c / b c a b a / c a b c b. Therefore the last
five letters are c a b c b or the numbers are 3 1 2 3 2.
Hence the answer is (B).

Illustration 2.
ZYYZR, ABVUM, ?, BCUTL, XWABT, CDTSK
(A) YXZAS (B) ZYABT (C) XWYZR (D) YXZAB
Solution
(A)
A careful look will show that there are two series of groups of letters namely.
(i) ZYYZR, (?), XWABT
(ii) ABVUM, BCUTL, CDTSK
In the first series, let us see the relation of letters in different positions.
Position Rule (?)
I Z?X 1 letter backward Y
II Y?W 1 letter backward X
III Y?A 1 letter forward Z
IV Z?B 1 letter forward A
V R?T 1 letter forward S
Hence the missing letter group is YXZAS i.e. (A) is the answer.
Illustration 3.
ACEGI, JLNPR, SUWYA, (?), KMOQS
(A) LBGHI (B) ADJFH (C) YWXAC (D) BDFHJ
Solution
(D)
A-C-E-G-I, i.e. There is a gap of one letter in the first group. Second group starts with J, i.e.
immediately after the last letter I in the first group, and there is a gap of one J-L-N-P-R. Following
this pattern the answer is BDFHJ i.e. (D)
Illustration 4.
aab_aaa_bba_
(A) b a a (B) a b b (C) b a b (D) a a b
D\Allen-Junior wing\MAT\2020-21\IX\Series.p65
Solution
(A)
Observe the above letter series
1. The first blank space should be filled in by ‘b’ so that two a’s are followed by two b’s
2. The second blank space should be filled in by either ‘a’ in which case four ‘a’ s are followed by
two ‘b’s.
3. The last space must be filled in by ‘a’.

Class IX : MAT
4. Possible answers are b a a or b b a. Since the alternatives contain only ‘b a a’ , (A) is the answer.
5. In case ‘b a a’ and b b a’ had appeared as possible alternatives, then we would choose one
which is a more prominent pattern.
a a b b/a a a b b b/a a
Would be a better choice so that the answer in that case would be b b a.
Illustration 5.
a_aab_aaaab_
(A) a a a (B) a a b (C) a b a (D) b a a
Solution
(B)
Possible series could be
aaaabaaaaabb
or abaabbaaaabb
Of the two possible answers i.e., a, a, b and b, b, b only the first appears as an alternative and is
therefore the only choice.
