i. Describe the rhyme scheme of the poem above and explain its function

Candidate must correctly describe the rhyme scheme).

ii. Apart from rhyme, identify and illustrate any other sound device used in the poem.

a) Alliteration -this is the debt I pay

b) Consonance -small was the debt I thought.

c) Assonance -years of regret and grief

(Any two correctly identified and illustrated. The marks are tied.)

iii. How would you perform line one and two of stanza 1 {2mks}

I would use a rising intonation to attract the attention of the audience at the beginning of my
performance.
I would stress the words debt pay riotous day (shows the agony of debtor-whatever he did on
that one day is costing him/to emphasize on the message)

I would frown to show sadness because of the regrets of my past mistake.

I would outstretch my arm and raise my index finger to show ‘one’

(Any other relevant answer but must be 1 verbal and 1 non-verbal. )

iv. How does the punctuation in the second stanza influence your reading of the poem
{2mks}

-The dash represents a significant pause, thus creating suspense because its not easy to anticipate
what the persona will say next.

-The comma is a short pause which gives the speaker time to catch his/her breath.

(2 marks for well explained answer)

b) Identify the odd one out according the pronunciation of consonant and vowel
sounds. {4mks}

happen to be one of the speakers. What are some of the things you would do during the
debate to ensure you are successful. {4mks}

 I would maintain meaningful eye contact for feedback.

 I would use meaningful gestures and facial expressions to enhance my argument

Being chairperson of your group, give three things you would do to ensure you lead a
successful discussion. {3mks}

 I would allow and encourage everyone to participate so that no one dominates the
discussion.
 I would ensure members contribute through the chair to maintain order.
 I would encourage use of polite expressions during interruptions to avoid tension during
the discussion.
 I would advise members to observe turn taking to promote orderliness.
 I would introduce the topic and encourage members to stick to the topic of discussion.

f) Fill in the gaps in the following conversation to make it flow. {5mks}

Willy: Faith, I would like to invite you to a football tournament at Moi stadium tomorrow
afternoon.

Faith: Thanks for the invite but I’m afraid I don’t enjoy watching football
Willy: Oh! Why is it that many girls are not football fans? Anyway, even if you don’t enjoy the
game, you might enjoy my company.

Faith: Okay I will consider that.

Willy: Thank you. that’s nice of you to say. So, is it a deal then?

Faith: Yes, but under a condition.

Willy: And what condition is that?

Faith: The condition is that after watching football, we’ll watch a movie together

Willy: But I don’t like watching movies because I find them are boring.

Faith: Boring? In that case then I will not accompany you to the tournament.
