Dear Candidate,

Congratulations on being shortlisted for the next stage of the selection process for the Subject
Matter Expert – Mathematics role.

Since this is a non-client-facing position, there will be no formal interview at this stage.
However, if a job opportunity arises for this role, shortlisted candidates may have a final
discussion with our Director via Zoom before selection.

As part of the evaluation, we have designed an assignment for you. Please read the instructions
carefully and ensure that your submission meets all requirements.

Assignment Details

You need to create 15 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) along with fully explained solutions.
Each question should have four answer options, with only one correct answer.

Each question must be clearly written, free from grammatical errors, and designed to challenge
students beyond standard school exercises. Do not include questions on calculus, modern
matrices, or trigonometry. The questions should be unlike anything students typically see in
school but should still be appropriate for their level.

Question Breakdown:

1. Puzzles (Questions 1–3): Create three mathematical yet logical puzzles.

2. Geometry Questions (Questions 4–6): Create three geometry-based questions.

3. General Math Questions (Questions 7–10): Choose any 4 differrent math topic and
create four unique questions.

4. Visual-Based Questions (Questions 11–15)

o Create five image-based math questions for Grades 1–5.

o Questions 11 & 12 should specifically target Grades 1 & 2—they must be simple
to understand but challenging to solve.

Important Guidelines:

Originality is Critical

• The questions can be copied from any source. However you need to alter the question
well enough to ensure that when looked up, it cant be found online.

• Even if a similar version is found online within the first three pages of a Google search, it
will result in immediate disqualification.

Difficulty Level Indication

• Next to each question, indicate the grade range you believe it is suitable for.
o Example: If a question is appropriate for Grades 3–5, write "Grade 3–5" next to
the question number. Note that we need questions well spread throughout
Grade 1 to 12 and not just tough questions.

Formatting & Presentation

• Number your questions clearly and follow the format used in the sample questions
provided below.

• Ensure explanations are detailed and well-structured. Attention to detail and accuracy
in your presentation is key and often a reason to select or reject an assignment.

You can upload your assignment (15 questions with each question followed by explanatory
answers ) in MS Word format here

Example 1 – Puzzles questions (For Q1-3)

Question:

A team must transport a custom-made luxury watch across a frozen tundra. Each snowmobile
can only carry enough fuel to reach halfway. There are additional snowmobiles available and
fuel can be transferred between them. How many snowmobiles are needed to ensure atleast 1
reaches the other side?

(A) 3

(B) 4

(C) 5

(D) 6

Solution:

The correct answer is Option (B) 4

Four snowmobiles, including the one that must reach the other side, start with full fuel tanks.

At 1/6th of the way, all four snowmobiles have 2/3 of their fuel left. One snowmobile sacrifices
itself by transferring its remaining fuel to two others. Now, two snowmobiles are full, and one is
2/3 full. The empty snowmobile is left behind.

At 2/6th of the way, two snowmobiles have 2/3 of their fuel left, while one has 1/3. The one with
1/3 fuel transfers it to another, filling it up. Now, one snowmobile is full, and the other has 2/3
fuel. The empty snowmobile is left behind.
At halfway, the remaining two snowmobiles continue. One has 2/3 fuel left, and the other has
1/3. The one with 1/3 fuel transfers it to the other, filling it up completely. Now, the last
snowmobile has enough fuel to make it to the other side.

Example 2 – Geometry questions (For Q4-6)

Question:

In the figure given below, ABCD is a square and AOB is an equilateral triangle. Find
DOC?

(A) 120°
(B) 150°
(C) 125°
(D) 140°
(E) Can't be determined

Solution:
The correct answer is (B) 150°
All angles of a square measure 90° and all angles of an equilateral triangle measure 60°.
DAO = DAB – OAB = 90° – 60° = 30°.
Since OA = AB (all sides of an equilateral triangle are equal)
 OA = DA
 ADO = DOA (angles opposite to equal sides are equal)
Now, in triangle DOA
DAO + ADO + DOA = 180°
 30° + DOA + DOA = 180°
 2DOA = 180° – 30° = 150°
 DOA = 75°
Similarly, COB = 75°
Now, DOC + COB + AOB + DOA = 360°
 DOC + 75° + 60° + 75° = 360°
 DOC = 360° – 210°
 DOC = 150°.

Example 3: Other topics (For Questions 7-10)

Question

Lily and Sarah are running a race. Since Sarah is faster than Lily, she gives her a 36-meter
head start. If Lily runs at a pace of 3 meters per second and Sarah runs at a pace of 5
meters per second, how much time would have elapsed till Sarah catches up with Lily?
(A) 15 seconds
(B) 18 seconds
(C) 25 seconds
(D) 30 seconds
(E) 45 seconds

Solution:
The correct answer is (B) 18 seconds
We can save time on this problem by dealing with the rate at which the distance between
Sarah and Lily changes.
Lily is originally 36 meters ahead of Sarah.
If Sarah runs at a rate of 5 meters per second and Lily runs at a rate of 3 meters per
second, then the distance between the two is decreasing at a rate of 5 – 3 = 2 meters per
second.
Or we could assume that Lily is stationary with Sarah moving towards her at a speed of 2
meters per second.
We can now figure out how long it will take for Sarah to catch Lily using a single equation.
The rate at which the distance between the two runners is shrinking is 2 meters per
second, and the distance is 36 meters (because that's how far apart Lily and Sarah are).
So, 2t = 36  t = 18 seconds.
Example For Grades 3 to 5: (Questions 11-15)

Question:
Look at the schedule of the University’s sports meet.

Which game took the 2nd least to complete?

(A) Diving Meet

(B) Men’s aBasketball game

(C) Women’s Volleyball Game.

(D) Men’s volleyball game

Solution:
The correct answer is (D) Men’s volleyball game

The women’s volleyball game will take 1 hour and 30 minutes (11:35 to 13:05)

The American football game will take 1 hour and 40 minutes (12:40 to14:20)

The women’s basketball game will take 3 hours (13:55 to 16:55)

The diving meet will take one hour (16:10 to 17:10)

The rugby match will take 3 hours (16:45 to 19:45)

The men’s basketball game will take 1 hour and 55 minutes (18:55 to 20:50)

The men’s volleyball game will take 1 hour and 20 minutes (20:55 to 22:15)
You can see that the diving meet took the least time and the men’s volleyball game took the
second least time of 1 hour and 20 minutes to complete.
