INTRO TO ARTS

ART - ars (latin): (CREATIVE, IMAGINATION, EXPRESSION)


- craft or specialized form of skill
- Expression of creative skill and imagination in different genres for appreciation of beauty and
emotional power
- A visual object or experience consciously created through an expression of skill or imagination.
The term art encompasses diverse media such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing,
decorative arts, photography, and installation.

THE ROLE OF CREATIVE IN ART MAKING - It allows us to creatively explore and convey ideas,
emotions, and perspectives in a tangible form.
ART AS AN EXPRESSION - Expressing emotions is different from describing emotions. This makes
people’s art not a reflection of what is outside or external to them, but a reflection of their inner selves
ART AS A PRODUCT OF IMAGINATION - Through imagination, one can craft something bold,
something new, and something better to create something that will stimulate change
IMAGINATION AS PRODUCT OF ART - ART(inspires) IMAGINATION

ASSUMPTIONS OF ART
1. ART IS UNIVERSAL Often, people feel that something is considered artistic if it was made a long
time ago. —--> misconception
2. ART IS UNIVERSAL - kundiman, florante at laura, fernando amorsolo. Afternoon meal of the rice

3. ART IS NOT NATURE - Art is not natural since it is created by man. It is the man’s way of
interpreting nature.
3. ART IS CULTURAL - Art has been part of human culture.It became a means to express feelings,
ideas, and transfer knowledge from one generation to another.
4. ART INVOLVES EXPERIENCE - Art depends on the experience. To know what an artwork is, we
have to sense it. Experiencing art is always a value judgement
5. ART AS EXPRESSION - Art is an expression of our thoughts, emotions, intuitions, and desires.
It is personal.
6. ART AS A FORM OF CREATION - Art is a diverse range of human activity, that results to
involving creative, imaginative, and conceptual ideas

PHILOSOPHICAL PERSPECTIVE OF ART

1. PLATO - He believed that art is an imitation of the real world. He argued that artists create copies
of the things they see around them. “Art as an imitation
2. ARISTOTLE - He considered art as a representation of reality. He believed that art is an aid to
Philosophy in revealing the truth
3. IMMANUEL KANT - He believed that art is a disinterested judgment. He argued that we
appreciate art for its own sake, and not for its external purposes. It is an artist’s fulfillment when
he accomplishes it the way he wants it to be. Judgment of beauty is subjective. Freedom in one’s
art (art for art’s sake)
4. LEO TOLSTOY - Leo Tolstoy believed that art is a communication of emotion. He argued that
artists use their work to convey their emotions to their audience. Art as a communication of
emotion
