HRFC 102 FUNDAMENTALS OF MANAGEMENT AND

ORGANIZATIONS

Course Objectives
1. To enable the students to appreciate the evolutionary process of management thought and to
develop understanding about the emerging trends that are vital for learning the conceptual
framework of management as a discipline
2. To ensure that students learnthe fundamental concepts of management; the basic functions of
management like planning,organizing, controlling and leading and make them aware of the
universality of management and need for formal management education
3. To help the students gain understanding the functions and responsibilities of the manager,
provide them tools and techniques to be used in the performance of managerial job, and enable
them to analyze and understand the environment of the organization

Industrial Revolution; Development of Factory System; Evolution of Schools of Thought in
Management - Scientific Management Theory by Frederick Taylor; Classical Organization
Theory by Henry Fayol, Bureaucratic Theory by Max Weber; Contributions of Henry Gantt,
Gilbreths and Mary Parker Follet; Behavioral School; Quantitative School; Modern Management
- Systems Approach and Contingency School; Contributions of Peter Drucker, Henry Mintzberg,
Chris Argyris, C. K. Prahlad, Daniel Goleman, Michael Porter, Philip Kotler, Tom Peters, David
Ulrich and others; Emerging Management Issues and Challenges.

Module II: The Concept of Management

Management; Nature and Purpose of Management; Basic Managerial Roles and Skills;
Functional & General Management; Functions of Managers; Kinds of Managers; Levels of
Management; Management as Profession, Art & Science, Management Process - Planning,
Organizing, Directing and Controlling; Environmental Context of Management; Business as a
System; Management and Society; Globalization and Management; Diversity Management.

Module III: Planning & Decision Making


Nature and Objectives of Planning; Types of Plans - Vision, Mission, Strategies, Goals, Policies,
Procedures; Strategic Planning Process; Steps in Planning; Planning Premises and Forecasting;
Competition and Strategic Management; BCG Matrix; Blue Ocean Strategy; Management by
Objectives (MBO); KRAs.
Decision Making in Organizations; Models of Decision Making - Rational Decision Making,
Bounded Rationality Model; Decision Making under Certainty, Uncertainty and Risk; Individual
and Group Decision Making; Technological Aids in Decision Making.

Module IV: The Organizing Function


Organization Theory and Design; Organizational Strategy and Structure; External and Internal
Factors of Organizational Design; Global Organization Design; Borderless and Virtual
Organizations; Dimensions of Organizational Design - Formalization, Centralization,
Specialization, and Standardization;Concepts of Responsibility, Accountability, Power,
Authority, Chain of Command and Hierarchy; Delegation of Authority; Organizational Chart,
Line& Staff Organizations; Mechanistic and Organic Organizations; Strategic Business Units
(SBU); Forms of Departmentation - Functional, Divisional, Matrix and Network Structures;
Right-sizing; De-layering.

Module V: Directing & Controlling Functions


Nature of Directing; Motivation; Supervision; Leadership; Teamwork; Communication,
Negotiation; Discipline.
Basic Elements of Control; The Process of Control; Designing a Control System - Techniques
and Tools; Financial Control; Budgetary Control Methods; Managing Operations; Quality and
