Ordered Pairs
Distance Formula
Suppose that P ( x1 , y1 ) and R( x2 , y2 ) are two points in a coordinate plane. The distance between P and R ,
written d ( P, R) , is given by the following formula.
d ( P, R ) = ________________________________.
The distance between two points in a coordinate plane is the square root of the sum of the square of the
difference between their x-coordinates and the square of the difference between their y-coordinates.
Reflect: What does the Pythagorean Theorem tell us about right triangles?
EXAMPLE 4 Applying the Distance Formula
Are the points ( −1, 5) , ( 2, −4) , and ( 4, − 10) collinear?
MIDPOINT FORMULA
The midpoint of the line-segment with endpoints P( x1 , y1 ) and Q( x2 , y2 ) has the following coordinates.
______________________________
That is, the x-coordinate of the midpoint of a line segment is the _______________ of the x-coordinates of
the segment’s endpoints, and the y-coordinate is the _______________ of the y-coordinates of the segment’s
endpoints.
EXAMPLE 5 Using the Midpoint Formula
Use the midpoint formula to do each of the following.
(a) Find the coordinates of the midpoint M of the segment with endpoints (8, −4) and (6, 1).
(b) Find the coordinates of the other endpoint Q of a segment with one endpoint P( −6,12) and midpoint
M (8, −2) .
(a) =
y 4x − 1 (b) =
x y −1 y x2 − 4
(c) =
y x2 − 4
(c) =
Reflect: What are intercepts? How do you find the x-intercept(s)? How do you find the
y-intercept(s)?
