Pulsatile Non Pulsatile Perfusion

Pulsatile and non-pulsatile perfusion are techniques used in cardiopulmonary bypass surgery, with pulsatile perfusion mimicking natural heart flow to improve microcirculation and organ function, while non-pulsatile perfusion offers a simpler and less expensive alternative. Pulsatile perfusion enhances organ function and reduces vascular resistance, whereas non-pulsatile perfusion is easier to manage but may reduce microcirculation and organ function. The choice between the two techniques depends on the complexity, cost, and desired outcomes during surgery.

Pulsatile and non-pulsatile perfusion are two different techniques used to

provide blood flow during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) surgery.

Pulsatile Perfusion

Pulsatile perfusion aims to mimic the natural pulsatile flow of the heart by
using a pump to generate a pulsatile pressure waveform. This technique is
designed to:

1. Improve microcirculation: Pulsatile flow can help to improve blood flow to

the microcirculation, which is essential for delivering oxygen and nutrients to
tissues.
2. Reduce vascular resistance: Pulsatile flow can help to reduce vascular
resistance, which can improve blood flow to organs and tissues.
3. Enhance organ function: Pulsatile flow has been shown to improve organ
function, particularly in the kidneys and liver.

Non-Pulsatile Perfusion

Non-pulsatile perfusion, also known as laminar flow, uses a pump to

generate a continuous, non-pulsatile flow of blood. This technique is simpler
and less expensive than pulsatile perfusion.

1. Simpler and less expensive: Non-pulsatile perfusion is a simpler and less

expensive technique than pulsatile perfusion.
2. Easier to manage: Non-pulsatile perfusion is easier to manage and
requires less technical expertise than pulsatile perfusion.
3. Still effective: Non-pulsatile perfusion is still an effective technique for
providing blood flow during CPB surgery.

Comparison of Pulsatile and Non-Pulsatile Perfusion

| | Pulsatile Perfusion | Non-Pulsatile Perfusion |

| Flow pattern | Pulsatile flow | Laminar flow |

| Microcirculation | Improved microcirculation | Reduced microcirculation |
| Vascular resistance | Reduced vascular resistance | Increased vascular
resistance |
| Organ function | Enhanced organ function | Reduced organ function |
| Complexity | More complex and expensive | Simpler and less expensive |
| Management | Requires more technical expertise | Easier to manage |
