Apparatus
1. AC/ DC battery of 2V
2. AC and DC ammeter
3. AC and DC voltmeter
4. A coil with large number
of turns
s. Rheostat

Theory
Self-Induct(!-nce is the properly of a coil
which opposes the charge in current
through it. The self-inductance of a coil
(long solenoid) is:-
Where,
µ 0
R~lative magnetic permeability of
:
material.
µr :Magnetic permeability of free
space.
N: Total number of turns o solenoid.
A: Area of cross-sectio of solenoid.
l: Length of soleno · .
Hence, self-inductance depends upon
• Number of turns
• Geometry of coil
• Nature of core material
Irms = Erms

circuit.
R=Resistance of resistor.
L=Self-inductance of co· .
GJ=2nv Angular f fJ quency of A. C.
source.
Circuit Diagram

Procedure
• Make all the connections as shown
in the circuit diagram.
• For the battery set at A. C. voltage
adjust the rheostat to get different
values of voltage as recorded by the
A. C. voltage across the inductor.
• Record the corresponding readings
of the A.C. ammeter.
Calculate impedance of the R-L
circuit.
Next, set the battery for D. C. voltage
and replace the A. C. voltmeter and
ammeter with its D. C. counterparts.
Adjust the rheostat and record
different values of voltage and the
corresponding values of current.
Calculate the resistance of the
circuit.
Using the impedance d resistance
calculate the induc nee of the coil.
Observations

Result
The self-inductance of the coil is
=3.86x10- 4 H
Precautions
1. The coil should have many
turns
2. The current should be passed
for a short time to prevent heating
effect
3. There should be no p . llax
error while recordin eadings
from the ammete and voltmeter.
Sources of Error
1. Resistance of coil might
increase slightly due to heating
effect.
2. There may be eddy currents
in soft iron core
