Reading Activity

Reading activities are essential skills that students need to master. They help
students expand their vocabulary by introducing new words through reading
and analyzing text paragraphs. They also enhance critical thinking and
analytical abilities, which are essential for understanding and interpreting
texts.

Steps to follow during a 45-minute lesson:

1. Introduction of the topic and instructions (5 minutes):

o The teacher selects reading material for the students from
English books or other suitable sources.
o The teacher ensures the reading material matches the students'
language level and clearly explains what they need to do and
what is expected of them during the lesson.
2. Students begin analyzing the material (10 minutes):
o Before starting, the teacher may ask students to predict the
content of the text based solely on its title. Students will come up
with their ideas "I think the text is about..
o After discussing the title, the teacher gives students five minutes
to skim the text and identify unfamiliar words.
3. Text interpretation (15 minutes):
o After students finish reading the text, the teacher may ask
questions related to the material. "What was the text about?",
"What are the main characters" and "Where does it take place".
Students may also encounter new words. While reading it the
teacher instructs them to list new words along with the
textbook's provided keywords.
4. Completing the exercises in the textbook (10 minutes):
o Once students have a clear understanding of the material, they
move on to the exercises in their coursebook, which include
questions and true/false tasks.
5. Overview (5 minutes):
o At the end of the lesson, students present a brief summary of the
text. "In this text the main character goes....
o The teacher assigns students homework. "Imagine you were the
main character in this story. What would you do different?".

Grade: 9

Level: B1

RAPUNZEL

There once lived a man and his wife who had long wished for a child, but in vain. Behind their
house was a garden full of fine vegetables and flowers, surrounded by a high wall and owned by
a witch whom everyone feared. One day, while standing at the window, the wife saw a bed of
rampion (a plant) and began to crave it desperately. She pined away until her husband, out of
love, climbed into the witch’s garden at twilight to steal some.

When he returned for more, the witch caught him. Furious, she demanded the child his wife was
carrying as payment. Desperate, the man agreed. When the child was born, the witch took her,
naming her Rapunzel.

Rapunzel grew into the most beautiful girl in the world. When she turned twelve, the witch
locked her in a tall tower with no doors or stairs, only a window. To visit her, the witch would
call, “Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair!” Rapunzel would lower her long golden hair, and
the witch would climb up.

One day, a prince heard Rapunzel singing while passing through the woods. Enchanted, he
watched as the witch climbed the tower. After she left, he called out the same words. Rapunzel
let down her hair, and he climbed up. Though frightened at first, Rapunzel warmed to him, and
they fell in love. They planned her escape with the prince bringing silk each time to weave into a
ladder.

The witch discovered their plan when Rapunzel innocently asked, “Mother Gothel, why are you
heavier to pull up than the prince?” In a rage, the witch cut off Rapunzel’s hair and banished her
to a desert. That evening, she tricked the prince, letting him climb the severed hair. Confronted
by the witch, the prince leapt from the tower in despair, surviving the fall but blinded by the
thorns below.

For years, the prince wandered the wilderness, surviving on roots and berries, lamenting
Rapunzel. Eventually, he heard her voice and found her. Overjoyed, she wept, and her tears
healed his blindness. The prince took Rapunzel and their twin children to his kingdom, where
they lived happily ever after.
