EE537-2025-Module 2.2 - (EMU) Trains

The document discusses two approaches to metro train design: custom-made trains tailored for specific operators, which are costly and time-consuming, and modular trains based on standard product platforms that allow for minor customization, are cheaper, and have shorter delivery times. It highlights key components of metro trains including car bodies, running gear, braking systems, and auxiliary systems. Additionally, it mentions various metro train models and their features, emphasizing the benefits of standardization in production.

Module 3
Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) Trains
For Heavy Metros – Product Platforms

1
Product Platforms for Metro Trains
Custom-made Metro Trains
• Design and manufacture metro trains to meet the requirements of a specific order from
a specific metro operator
• Expensive – carry out complete design works and setting up production rigs for one
specific order of trains
• Very costly for small batch orders
• Long delivery time – 4 to 5 years

Metro Trains based on Standard product Platforms

• Modular metro trains configurable to meet the needs a full variety of metro operators
• Minor customization is possible
• Extensive use of standard components
• Design process is very much shortened
• Much cheaper
• Delivery time is much shorter – 2 to 3 years
• After sale technical support by vendor is more secure

Train Formation - With Articulated Bogie

• An articulated bogie is added for each car reduce the inter bogie centre distance by 50%
• The effective length of car for negotiating curves is also halved.
• The train can therefore negotiate cruves with smaller curve radius.
