Symptom

Persistent memory (PMEM) is a new, alternative main memory architecture that is supported since HANA 2.0
SPS 03.

You are looking for information on how to size SAP HANA with persistent memory.

Solution

Sizing SAP HANA with DRAM and persistent memory follows the same rules as sizing for SAP HANA with a
pure-DRAM configuration.

SAP supports server configurations that fulfill the following requirements:

• Intel Cascade Lake SP CPUs (or later).


• Homogeneous symmetrical assembly of DRAM and PMEM DIMMs with maximum utilization of all
memory channels per processor.
• Ratio between DRAM and PMEM capacity of 2:1, 1:1, 1:2 or 1:4.
• Larger ratios only in exceptional cases (data tiering, where large amounts of warm data will be stored
in PMEM).
• Total capacity of up to 24 TB per physical server.
• Sufficient hardware resources for the intended use case.
• Especially DRAM, persistent memory, and CPU.
• Insufficient resources may negatively impact performance and stability of SAP HANA.
• Expert sizing is strongly recommended!

Persistent memory is only available with Tailored Data Center Integration (TDI). A statement regarding
certified servers has been added to the SAP HANA hardware directory.

Sizing Tools

SAP HANA with persistent memory follows the same sizing rules as SAP HANA with only DRAM. The same
sizing tools should be used to ensure that the hardware has sufficient capacity.

Customers that want to use different ratios than recommended by the sizing tools are expected to carefully
evaluate the sizing requirements of their application, for example, via an expert sizing.

SQL statements for memory assessment

The SQL statements attached to this note can be used to assess the current memory utilization on existing
SAP HANA databases. These statements do not replace the official SAP sizing tools, but are meant to
provide additional information.
