Hustling
In the last year the viewing public have learned a great deal about a certain type of criminal in the
extremely successful TV series Hustle. The first Hustle DVD is released this week and it's set to be a best-
seller.
Hustle is all about the adventures of a group of con artists. Con artists are people who persuade rich people
to give them lots of money to finance projects or plans that do not exist. The ideas are often very
complicated. Sometimes the group creates a real background for the trick by hiring actors, offices, or
houses to persuade the people they are conning that they are genuine. For them, lying is an art!

Can Computers Become Artists?
Machines already perform a lot of tasks that were usually done by humans, such as building cars, doing
complex calculations, and even marking exam papers. But now it seems that ever more intelligent
machines are straying into areas where we never envisaged they would go. We have always taken pride in
having a unique kind of intelligence that machines could never match, one which allows us to think of new
ideas and produce creative and artistic works. But it seems that even here, computers are lining up to
compete with us.
Machines can easily be trained to do the physical work of producing art. About ten years ago, a painting
robot known as e-David was created at a university in Germany. And recently in New York, the painting
Portrait of Edmond de Belamy has been auctioned for nearly half a million dollars. What made it a bit
unusual was that the idea, and the image itself, was produced entirely by a computer. A group of young
French artists gave instructions to the computer, aiming simply to show that computers can be creative.
Some artists are now working with computers to produce a new kind of art. Computer-generated works of
art are certainly interesting, and make us think about the limits of what machines can and cannot do. But
not everyone would accept that they qualify as art. Some enthusiasts would argue they do, and the
collectors willing to pay high prices for these works would suggest there is definitely a market for
computer art. Others, however, would disagree.
Many 'real' artists would claim that art is an expression of human intelligence and human emotions. More
importantly, it is about a desire to communicate with other people. These things, they argue, are part of
being human and can never be produced by a machine.
1. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

A. other people B. these things C. human emotions D. ‘real’ artists
5. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

B. Humans are proud of possessing a unique kind of intelligence that enables them to be creative.
C. Computers have been competing with humans in the creation of a new kind of art.

Exercise 3: Read the text, and decide whether the sentences are true (T) or false (F).
Not here!
Where would you expect to find graffiti? On walls and bridges? Perhaps in special exhibitions? But
probably not all over the front of a historic Scottish castle.
But soon that's exactly where you will be able to see it. And this is not vandalism on a grand scale. Four
graffiti artists, who are well-respected in their home country of Brazil, have been commissioned by the
owner to completely cover one side of the castle with bright, colourful graffiti.
The reason is that the outer covering of the walls of the castle is in very bad condition and in a couple of
years it will need to be replaced. The family thought it would be interesting to have the graffiti painted on
until then. The artists will be staying at the castle and working on it for a month. After that it will no doubt
become a tourist attraction for visitors to the area.
Most local people support the idea but there have been some negative reactions from people across the
country who think it is completely inappropriate. But the family are convinced that when it is completed
people will love it. They hope they are helping graffiti to be accepted as a valuable and respected art form.
1. The graffiti at the castle will not be permanent. T

answer to each of the questions from 39 to 43.

Walt Disney's entertainment empire, often referred to as the "House of Mouse," owes much of its

iconic status to Mickey Mouse. Mickey's distinctive round ears, often in silhouette or on hats, have become

one of the world's most recognizable corporate logos. However, a few pivotal decisions in the 1920s could

have led to a different emblem — rabbit ears.

In the mid-1920s, Disney, a young animator, was producing the Alice Comedies, a series blending

live-action with animation. Eager to focus on entirely animated films, he struck a deal with Universal in

1927 to create a series featuring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Universal had selected both the character's name

19 |
and species – Oswald, chosen from a hat of names, became a rabbit due to market saturation of cartoon

cats.

Disney and his chief animator, Ub Iwerks, created Oswald, whose design Universal initially disliked

as old and pudgy. Disney and Iwerks revamped Oswald, giving him a more energetic appearance, bearing

a striking resemblance to a certain every mouse Disney would later create. Oswald's distinctive personality

was also crafted, making him mischievous yet endearing.

Oswald's first film, "Trolley Troubles," debuted in 1927, marking Disney's introduction to character

merchandise licensing. The film succeeded, prompting Disney and Iwerks to produce new films rapidly.

However, Disney's association with Oswald ended due to conflicts with his distributor, Charles Mintz.

Mintz forced Disney out, leading him to create a new character he could fully own – Mickey Mouse,

introduced in November 1928.

Oswald continued in films for over a decade but was eventually overshadowed by Mickey. In a

surprising twist, Disney reacquired Oswald's rights from Universal in 2006, leading to Oswald's revival in

Disney entertainment and merchandise, including a 2010 video game where he starred.

39. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?

Centuries have passed since Leonardo da Vinci crafted the Mona Lisa (1503–19), yet this modest

portrayal of an ordinary woman still captivates within the Louvre's fortified glass. The world's most

renowned painting, its charm remains a puzzle to many.

The Mona Lisa's acclaim isn't solely due to its high quality, though that's undeniable. Leonardo's

contemporaries recognized its merit even during its creation. His ingenious three-quarter pose and

remarkable mimicry of nature earned praise. Subtle shadows and meticulous details showcase his

precision, revealing the complexity of human existence.

Housing it in the Louvre, one of the world's most esteemed museums, bolstered its prestige. Its

journey to the Louvre, starting with Francis I of France, ultimately contributed to its renown. The painting

became part of the royal collection, later inherited by the French public during the Revolution. After a brief

sojourn in Napoleon's residence, it found a permanent home in the Louvre in the early 19th century.

The identity of the sitter added intrigue. Though believed by many to be Lisa Gherardini, wife of

Florentine merchant Francesco del Giocondo, no concrete evidence exists of this commission. This mystery

allowed the figure to assume various interpretations.

However, it was the 1911 theft and the ensuing media frenzy that thrust the painting onto the global

stage. The world watched in shock as news of the theft broke. Crowds gathered at the Louvre, the director

resigned, and accusations flew. Even Pablo Picasso fell under suspicion. Two years later, the painting was

recovered in Italy, igniting celebrations across France. This daring theft turned the Mona Lisa into a

national treasure, cherished by all who had lost and found her.

Mannerism, an art style, arose in response to the harmonious classicism and idealized naturalism of

the High Renaissance period, spearheaded by artists like Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael in

the early 16th century. While these Renaissance artists had set standards for formal complexity and

26 |
idealized beauty, Mannerist successors became obsessed with style and technique, often overshadowing

the subject matter. They prioritized intricate artistic challenges, especially depicting nudes in complex and

unnatural poses.

Mannerist art is marked by its artificiality, artiness, and a conscious pursuit of elegance and technical

prowess. Figures in Mannerist works often have elongated limbs, small heads, and stylized facial features,

with poses that appear contrived. The deep, linear perspective of the High Renaissance was replaced with a

flattened, obscured space, presenting figures as decorative forms against an ambiguous background.

Mannerist artists continually refined their work, pushing exaggeration, contrast, and grotesque

fantasies to extremes. Elements of Mannerism appeared in some of Raphael's later works, with Florence's

Rosso Fiorentino and Jacopo da Pontormo notably breaking away from Renaissance classicism.

This Mannerist style matured in the works of artists like Parmigianino, Rosso, and Pontormo, and

even influenced Michelangelo's The Last Judgement. Beyond Italy, Mannerism spread to France and

northern Europe through artists like Bronzino, Primaticcio, and others. The style's influence extended to

Bartholomaeus Spranger, Hendrik Goltzius, and Hans von Aachen. Emperor Rudolf II's patronage in

Prague further nurtured Mannerism, sometimes veering into the grotesque and enigmatic.

Mannerism, thus, represents a significant departure from the High Renaissance, characterized by its

artful and often eccentric approach to form, composition, and colour.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct

answer to each of the questions from 44 to 50.

The advent of street photography as a distinct genre is a relatively recent development, emerging just

over half a century ago. In the early 20th century, pioneering photographers like Alfred Stieglitz explored

urban scenes, but the limitations of technology led most photographers to primarily test the camera's

capabilities and manipulate images in darkrooms for desired effects. The impulse to capture real-life
moments gained momentum with Impressionist painters in the 1880s, setting the stage for street

photography.

A pivotal moment arrived with the introduction of the Leica handheld camera in 1924. This 35-mm

film camera allowed photographers to be mobile, capturing the essence of movement. Its wide aperture

required shorter exposure times, revolutionizing outdoor photography. The Leica's rapid advancement

enabled the capture of numerous sequential shots, eliminating the need for long exposure times and

blurred movements.

Photographers like André Kertész, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Ilse Bing, who primarily worked in

Europe in the 1930s, favoured the Leica, though they didn't necessarily label themselves as street

photographers. Instead, they identified as photojournalists, fashion photographers, or experimentalists.

Following World War II, the Leica remained a favourite, particularly among New York City

photographers, including Helen Levitt, Lisette Model, William Klein, and Roy DeCarava. Street

photography gained ground globally, with notable practitioners like Manuel Álvarez Bravo and Graciela

Iturbide in Mexico, Robert Doisneau in Paris, Josef Koudelka in Czechoslovakia, and Bill Brandt in London.

The 1960s brought a new wave of street photographers, with Lee Friedlander, Garry Winogrand, and

Diane Arbus leading the way. This generation, epitomized by the 1967 "New Documents" exhibition at the

Museum of Modern Art in New York City, demonstrated a documentary approach blended with personal

perspectives. This recognition of photography as artistry rather than mere record-keeping paved the path

for subsequent generations of street photographers worldwide, both with traditional cameras and, in the

21st century, with cell phones. Street photography continues to thrive as an art form deeply embedded in

contemporary culture.
