Planting methods of

Sugarcane Farming.
Sugar cane
Sugar cane is an important crop in many
tropical and subtropical regions. Planting
sugar cane can be done using several
methods, each adapted to different climatic
conditions, soil conditions and agricultural
practices.
The most common methods are detailed
below:
1. Jet or broadcast so wing
This method involves spr eading the c ane stalks e v e nly ove r the
ground and t hen cover ing them with a light laye r of soil. It is le ss
precise and is gener ally used in ar eas whe r e m e chani z ation is
limited. Br oadcast seeding may r esult in le ss u ni for m plant
density.
The most common methods are detailed
below:

2. Sowing in furrows
This i s the most commonly u sed method a nd i s done as
follows:

Preparation of t he land: The gr ou nd is tilled and le v e le d .

Opening of fur r ows: Par allel fu r r ows ar e opene d abou t 20-
30 cm deep, wit h a separ ation of 1.2 to 1.5 m e te r s b e twe e n
them.
Placement of stems: P ieces of stem (vege tative se e ds)
with 2 to 3 buds ar e placed longitudinally in the fu r r ows.
Coverage: The stems ar e c over ed with a light laye r of soil
(2-5 cm).
The most common methods are detailed
below:
3. Planting in hol es o r ditc hes
In this method, individu al holes or tr enche s ar e d u g whe r e the
cane stalks ar e placed. The holes can be 30x30 cm in si z e and 20-
30 cm deep. This method can be u sef u l on u ne v e n te r r ain or
where more pr ecise contr ol of the plantation i s sou ght.
The most common methods are detailed
below:
4. Drizzle sowing
Similar to furr ow planting, bu t the c ane stalks ar e place d i n a
continuous row wit hin the fu r r ow, leaving no sp ace s b e twe e n
them. This can increase planting density and i s u se d i n ar e as
where more intensive pr odu ction is sou ght.
The most common methods are detailed
below:
5. Mechanized sowing
This method involves the use of specialized
machinery for planting, which allows for
faster and more efficient planting. The steps
include:

Land preparation: Similar to planting in

furrows.
Planting machinery: Tractors equipped with
seeders that open furrows, cut and place
the stems, and then cover them with soil.
Advantages: Greater uniformity and
efficiency in planting, reduction of time and
labor required.
