DIASS Module 10
DIASS Module 10
Introduction
Guidance is a fundamental information service offered to students during their scholastic career.
Strategies to support the development of a positive, supportive and respectful classroom
environment, including teaching social competencies that facilitate responsible student behavior
will be examined. Specific behavioral challenges and issues will be investigated.
Strategic guidance is also about being able to adapt and react quickly to change our strategies
as needs arise. The world we engage in is rarely static and none of our interventions occur in a
vacuum. The change we seek to bring about today is influenced by yesterday's events, which
include those that we influence and those that are outside of our control throughout the course of
implementation. We also need to bear in mind that as we implement, we gain experience and
learn lessons. These experiences and lessons can change the way in which we view things over
time and therefore the decisions that we make.
Positive discipline strategies begin with adult behaviors: good limit setting, clearly communicating
limits. They include teaching more appropriate behavior, giving cues for the new behavior, giving
choices, and supporting children in their new behavior. Positive guidance and discipline also
include changing something about a situation and ignoring behavior when it is appropriate to do
so.
Learning Objectives
After reading and analyzing the unit, you should be able to:
Positive guidance and discipline continue when adults manage typical discipline encounters with
positive, helpful strategies redirection, active listening, I-messages, conflict resolution, and
recognizing and dealing with strong emotions.
Finally, helpful adults learn to recognize signs of stress, anxiety, and strong emotion. They try to
prevent overstimulation, and they teach calming techniques. Helping children save face and
preserve their dignity in discipline encounters is the most important and essential element in child
guidance.
DEVELOPING SELF-CONFIDENCE
Self-confidence is extremely important in almost every aspect of our lives, yet so many people
struggle to find it. Sadly, this can be a vicious circle: people who lack self-confidence can find it
difficult to become successful.
Confidence can be a tough thing to build up, so we have put together some handy tips to help
you out. If you are still having a hard time do not worry! There are other ways you can find extra
support, and work on boosting your confidence. Not everyone is born with an inbuilt sense of self-
confidence. Sometimes it can be hard to develop confidence, either because of personal
experiences that have caused you to lose confidence, or if you suffer from low self-esteem.
There are a couple of handy things you can do to build your confidence. Some of them are just
little changes to your frame of mind, and others are things you have to work on for a bit longer to
make them familiar habits.
Sometimes it can be easy to focus on what you have not done. It is easy to lose confidence if you
feel like you have not achieved anything. Focusing on stuff you have done, big or small, can help
you gain perspective on all your talents and abilities.
Write down a list of all the things you are proud of in your life. Think of the things you have
achieved, whether it is getting a list close and adding to it when you do something you are proud
of. When you are low in confidence, pull this list out and use it to remind yourself of all the
awesome stuff you have done.
Everyone has strengths and talents, what are yours? Have a look at our fact sheet on strengths
and work out how you can build on yours. Recognizing what you are good at and trying to build
on those things can be a useful way of building confidence in your own abilities.
Set some goals and aim to achieve them. By proving to yourself that you can get stuff done, you
will prove to yourself that you can achieve. They do not have to be big goals; they can even be
things like baking a cake or planning a night out with friends. Just little things that can be ticked
off a list and help you gain self-confidence in your ability to get stuff done.
Talk yourself up
You are never going to feel confident if you have a negative Commentary running through your
mind telling you are no good. Think about your self-talk and how that might be affecting your self-
confidence. Have a read of our fact sheet on self-talk to get some handy tips on turning your
negative self-talk around.
Get a hobby
Try to find something that you are really passionate about. Do you like playing footy? Like building
model trains? Think of some of the stuff you are really interested in and commit yourself to giving
them a go. Finding stuff that you are passionate about will help you find stuff that you are good
at. Chances are if you are ted or passionate about a certain activity you are likely to be good at it
as well.
SELF-IMPROVING PROGRAMS
The term "self-improvement" broadly refers to the act of improving yourself, but it can also be
applied to a number of different topics. Self-improvement can include personal development in
terms of leadership skills, goal setting, visualization skills, organizational skills, time management,
and mind power. It helps us defeat negative thoughts that prevent us from believing in ourselves.
It teaches us to convert our negative thinking into thoughts that empower and inspire us.
Self-improvement can help us make positive changes in all aspects of life. Here are some of the
most important advantages of self-improvement:
Overall health: Self-improvement gives us the motivation to start eating healthily and engage in
healthy physical activities. As a result, we can maintain our physical fitness and improve our
overall health.
Healthy relationships: Through self-improvement, you can identify the faults in how you interact
with others. This enables you to make positive changes that can be beneficial for enhancing your
interpersonal relationships.
Improved skills: Self-improvement helps you realize your professional limitations, enabling you to
work on making improvements. As a result, you can develop your skills and talents for your own
benefit. Self-improvement may even motivate you to pick up a new skill, hobby or interest, which
is crucial for living a fulfilled life
Study skills
Students from grade school through a doctoral level program and beyond make use of study
skills. This is a broad term that applies to tools and strategies used to make learning more efficient,
organized, and successful. Techniques used for organizing study time, methods used for
assimilating the information, and test preparation can be included within the purview of study
skills.
A study skills test measures how an individual prepares for exams. It is an assessment of an
individual’s current study skills and how he participates in the learning process. The purpose of
this assessment is to identify the areas that an individual needs more support in. Some of those
areas include organization, memorization techniques and test anxiety.
Problem Solving
Problem Solving is an ongoing activity in which we take what we know to discover what we do
not know. It involves overcoming obstacles by generating hypotheses, testing those predictions,
and arriving at satisfactory solutions.
• Seeking Information
• Generating new knowledge
• Making Decisions
Here is a five-stage model that most students can easily memorize and put into action which has
direct applications to many areas of the curriculum as well as everyday life.
