class 19 topographoc maps

The document outlines the objectives and procedures for a topographic surveying class project in CE 211 – Surveying Engineering. It includes details on skills to be developed, such as measuring angles and distances, profile leveling, and mapping techniques, along with an introduction to contour lines and plotting methods. The project involves approximately 5 hours of field data collection and 3 hours of computation and mapping.

INTRODUCTION CONTOUR LINES

• The chief characteristic of a topo map is its
graphical depiction of surface.
• The most common way of showing the
terrain or the shape of the ground on a two-
dimensional map is to use a series of contour
lines.
• A contour line is simply a horizontal line that
passes through points of equal elevation on a
General-purpose topographic map; a portion of a USGS quadrangle map at a map.
