3.3 plants around us
➢ Various kinds of plant grow on earth.
➢ Plants are living things that can make their own food.
➢ Some plants are so tiny that people cannot see them. Others are trees
that grow as tall as skyscrapers

➢ Plants cannot move around.
➢ All green plants use the sun’s energy, water, and a gas called carbon
dioxide to make their own food this process is called Photosynthesis
1. Parts of a plant and their function
Stem, leaf, flower and root are parts of a plant
A. STEAM is part of plant which is found above ground.
➢ The steam of a plant is “like a straw”. i.e the stem is made up of
little tubes
➢ Stems carry water and nutrients taken up by the roots to the
leaves.
➢ Stems also provide support for the plant allowing the leaves to
reach the sunlight that they need to produce food.
➢ Where the leaves join the stem is called the node.
➢ The portion of the plant stem between two nodes is called the
internode.
B. Roots
➢ The roots help provide support by anchoring the plant and absorbing water
and nutrients needed for growth.
➢ They can also store sugars and carbohydrates the plant uses to carry out
other functions.
➢ Plants can have either a tap root system (carrots) or a fibrous root system
(turf grass)
➢ The roots are what carry the water an d nutrients needed for plants to
grow.

4
C- Leaves
➢ Are one of the parts of the shoot system, which are leaves are found
attached to the stem.
➢ Leaves are the food making factories of green plants.
➢ Leaves come in many different shapes and sizes.

D- Flower:- is the reproductive structure of plants.

Flowers are not only look pretty but are important in making seeds.

5
The structure of a flower

➢ Flowers have some basic parts

- Sepal - stamens and Receptacle
- Petals - pistils
➢ Pistils;- is the female part of the flower
- Is located in the center of the flower and is made up three parts stigma,
Style and ovary.
➢ Stamens:- is the male parts of the flower each stamen consists of anther
and filament
➢ Sepals: are usually found at the base and protect the flower.
➢ Petals: are usually colorful parts of the flower to attract pollinators (birds
and Insects0
