B. Acquisition

The English language has evolved a number of times before it became

the language we intimately speak today. One means of evolution of
language is our innate ability to coin new words out of familiar ones.

Word formation process:

 Clipping: Shortening a longer word (e.g., "phone" from "telephone").
 Blending: Combining parts of two words (e.g., "brunch" from
"breakfast" and "lunch").
 Acronymy: Forming a word from the initial letters of a phrase (e.g.,
"NASA" from "National Aeronautics and Space Administration").
 Compounding: Combining two full words to create a new word (e.g.,
"notebook").
 Folk Etymology: Altering a word to make it seem more familiar or
understandable (e.g., "hangnail" from Old English "agnail").

Essential Questions:
1. How has the evolution of language influenced communication in
modern society?
2. What role do technological advancements play in shaping the evolution
of language?
3. Explain the significance of understanding word formation processes in
improving language skills.
4. How can the evolution of language influence cultural practices and
societal norms?

another language of your choice.

chart that visually represents their assigned word formation
process.

The poster should include:

 A definition of the process
 A brief explanation of how it works
