Culturing Drosophila Melanogaster
Objective: Drosophila melanogaster culture is used to study several aspects of genetics.
Using fruit flies as a model, researchers can examine gene expression, regulation, and
inheritance patterns.
INTRODUCTION
Fruit fly culture, or Drosophila Melanogaster, is a vital tool in genetics and developmental
biology research. Fruit flies are a great model organism due to their short generation time,
ease of maintenance, and well-understood genetics. An optimal habitat must be established,
complete with nutrient-rich substrate, the right humidity and temperature, and other
conditions for the flies to thrive.
Beyond its simplicity of upkeep, drosophila culture offers extra benefits. Because they have
a well-defined gene pool and a mendelian inheritance pattern, fruit flies are an ideal model
organism for genetics study. With Drosophila, scientists may look at the fundamental
mechanisms of organ development, metamorphosis, and embryogenesis.
Materials:
1. Ripe bananas
2. Vinegar
3. Used/old stockings
4. Yeast
5. Containers
6. Shredded papers
7. Magnifying glass
Procedure:
1. Peel and mash ripe bananas in a bowl
2. Add pinch of Yeast then mix.
3. Add small amount of vinegar and mix
4. Sterilize the container.
5. Then transfer the mixture into the sterilized jar.

6. Then add some shredded papers into the jar.
7. Cover the jar with small holes to give entrance of the Drosophila and label it.
8. When seen that there are fruit flies inside the jar, replace the cover with old or used
stockings.
Results
The researcher in our experiment encountered difficulties gathering data since the
drosophila melanogaster flies unexpectedly died during the culture stage. We did our utmost
to provide a suitable habitat, but the flies did not survive as planned. This negative outcome
made it more difficult for the researcher to collect the data needed to look at the desired
traits. There are several plausible theories for the fly mortality, including environmental
factors, improper handling, and contamination, even though the precise cause is unknown.
This conclusion highlights the challenges and uncertainties that can arise in scientific
research and the importance of close observation, even though it is depressing and will slow
the advancement of our investigation.
Discussion
When cultivating the drosophila, we encountered significant challenges in our experiment
that led to an unsatisfactory conclusion. One reason why this result might not be successful
is contamination. It can come from a variety of sources, such as improper sterilization or the
addition of extraneous materials during the culture process. The unsatisfactory result may
have been caused by mistreating the flies. Due to its sensitivity, Drosophila melanogaster
might become physically harmed or stressed out during transfers or other procedures, which
could increase the organism's mortality rate.
Conclusion
The impacts of this failed result are crucial for the study, the researcher concludes,
underlining the necessity for careful attention to detail and the refinement of the
experimental procedures in the development of Drosophila melanogaster. It is challenging to
draw conclusions or take suitable action in the absence of the necessary data.
