Transformations

The document outlines three types of transformations: translation, reflection, and rotation. Translation moves a shape without altering its size or orientation, reflection flips a shape across a mirror line, and rotation turns a shape around a specific point. Each transformation maintains the size of the original shape while changing its position or orientation.

TRANSFORMATIONS

1. Translation
2. Reflection
3. Rotation
Translation
A translation is a transformation that
moves a shape up, down, left, or right
without changing its size or shape.
Translation rules
Every point in the shape moves the
same distance in the same direction
The translated shape is congruent to
the original shape
The shape's orientation does not
change

Reflection
What is a reflection?
 A reflection flips a shape across
a mirror line
o This is called the line of
reflection
 The reflected image is the same
size as the original object
o It has been flipped across the
mirror line to a new
position and orientation
 The following two distances will be
equal for each point:
o The perpendicular
distance between the original
point and the mirror line
o The perpendicular
distance between the reflected
point and the mirror line
 Any points that are on the mirror
line do not move
o These are called invariant
points
Rotation
A rotation turns a shape around a
point
o This is called the centre of
rotation
 The rotated image is the same
size as the original image
o It will have a new position and
orientation
 If the centre is a point on the original
shape, then that point is not
changed by the rotation
Rotation can be clockwise or
anticlockwise

How do I rotate a shape?

 STEP 1
Place the tracing paper over page
and draw over the original object
 STEP 2
Place the point of your pencil on
the centre of rotation
 STEP 3
Rotate the tracing paper by
the given angle in the given
direction
 STEP 4
Carefully draw the image onto the
coordinate grid in the position
shown by the tracing paper
How do I describe a rotation?
 To describe a rotation, you must:
o State that the transformation is
a rotation
o State the centre of rotation
o State the angle of rotation
o State the direction of rotation
 Clockwise or anti-clockwise
 To find the centre of rotation:
o If the rotation is 90°
 Use tracing paper and start
on the original shape
 Try a point as the centre and
rotate the original shape
 If the rotated shape matches
the image, then that point is
the centre
 Otherwise keep picking points
until one works
