Meaning
It is very important political philosophy in contemporary world which deals with the duty of
the individual towards the state and the stability of state is totally dependent upon when, why
and how does the individual obey law given by the state. It provides the basis for the state to
rule. The question of political obligation is basically related to the liberal political system,
where the basic question is what should be the limit of the individual freedom and the scope of
the state’s work. It marks the limit of relationship between the citizen and the state.
It implies that as human being is a political animal, he is bound to live under some authority
and as such, it becomes his obligation to obey its command, this duty to obey the state is called
political obligation. An individual has to follow the rules and regulations in the society for his
own welfare and the welfare of the society. T.H Green defined it as obligation of the subject
towards the sovereign, the obligation of the citizen towards the state, and the obligation of the
individuals to each other as enforced by a political superior.
➢ Some Citizens obey law only because they have respect for the power.
➢ People will readily obey laws, if they are found to be rational and useful.
➢ Some citizens obey laws because they wish to avoid punishment with its evil effects.
➢ Most of the citizens aware that the state has some purpose. It protects from external
aggression and internal disorder.
➢ Without tShe cooperation, the state can’t control the society due to its weakness, then
disorder and anarchy shall prevail in the society. Thus, for stability and maintaining
order in the society citizens should obey the state.
➢ The law must be legitimate then only it will be obeyed by the people.
