This paper consists of 3 tasks.

Task One (20 marks)
A. Provide the term for each definition. (8marks)

1. A suprasegmental feature of language. The emphasis placed on syllables within a


word and on words within sentences.

2. Sound differences at word boundaries, which produces a change in meaning

3. Studying the way in which sounds are used in a language and their relationship with
each other

4. The smallest meaningful unit of the language

B. Provide a definition or an appropriate brief explanation and an example for each of the
terms below. (12 marks)

1. Assimilation
2. Collocation
3. Allophone

Task Two (40 marks)

1. Write these words in normal English scripts.

2. Write these words in a phonemic transcription:


Asia and Europe, shoelace, devour, TESOL

3. Write the following paragraph in normal English scripts.


4. Write down the minimal pairs for the given phonemes.

5. Correct the following sentences and identify the types of mistakes.


a. I look forward to see you soon.
b. A number of people comes to the class.
c. Please take your dinner with us.
d. Don’t go in the sun.
e. I want a little quantity of milk.
f. Fiona is a hard student.
g. Your coat is broken.
h. News were being broadcasted on TV.

6. How many morphemes are there in the given words?

7. Describe as precisely as you can what happens in manner and place of articulation when

saying the following phrases: “Queen of spades”

8. Comment on the possible features of connected speech in the following extract.

“She is usually open-minded, but she holds onto some strange ideas.”

9. Explain the differences between the following pairs of sentences.

• She practices the violin every day.

• How do you intend to put these proposals into practice?

Task 3 (40 marks)


1. Advocates of the Communicative Language Teaching approach do not favour the
teaching of grammar. However, the place of grammar is still significant in most
classrooms. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

2. Some teachers note that intelligibility plays an important role in learning a language
rather than sounding like a native speaker. To which extent do you agree?
