Verb Agreement
What is agreement?
Agreement is the correct relationship
between a subject and its verb,
between a pronoun and its noun
referent, or between a pronoun and
its referent.
1. A singular subject requires a
singular verb in the present tense
Therefore,
Singular subject + verbs with -s or –es
or is, has does
Examples:
She sleeps early.
It is a sunny day.
2. A plural subject requires a plural
verb in the present tense
Therefore,
Plural subject + verbs without -s or –
es or are, have do
Examples:
Rene and Arman are friends.

We have a new teacher.

They love Korean dramas.


3. A compound subject joined by
and usually requires a plural
verb.
Examples:
Bacoor and Imus are two
progressive cities in Cavite.

The teachers and the students of


BNHS-Main have decided to cancel
the program.
Exception:
When the items of a compound
subject joined by and refer to the
same person or thing or together
represent a single unit or idea, a
singular verb is required.
Example:
How about this sentence?

Either the janitor or the guards


have seen the intruder.

What rule does the sentence


illustrate?
3. When the items of the compound
subject joined by either or, neither
nor, differ in number or in person,
the verb agrees with the nearer
subject.
Examples:
Neither the guard nor the janitor
has seen the intruder.

Neither the guard nor the janitors


have seen the intruder.
How about this sentence?

Physics is a branch of science


concerned with the nature and
properties of matter and energy.

What rule does the sentence


illustrate?
4. Nouns plural in form but singular
in meaning such as physics,
economics, mathematics, measles,
mumps, news, etc. require a
singular verb.
Examples:

Statistics is the science of collecting


and analyzing numerical data in
large quantities.

Mathematics has numerous


applications.
