I INTRODUCTION

1.1 INTRODUCTION:
This report is based on my final year project experience with MOONSTAR
LINES PVT LTD, over the study of 40 days, I had gain practical insights in to intricate process
involved in NVOCC and forwarding.

MOONSTAR LINES offers integrated logistics, Global freight forwarding and supply chain
solutions .We provide highly customized solutions to customers, meeting their needs from sourcing
and manufacturing to selling around the world.

Moon star Lines Pvt Ltd is a leading Indian shipping company based in Chennai. Established in
2010, the company operates as a Non-Vessel Operating Common Carrier (NVOCC) in India, with
offices in Tuticorin, Mumbai, Colombo, and Malaysia.

Meaning of NVOCC:
A Non-Vessel Operating Common Carrier (NVOCC) performs the
functions of an ocean carrier but does not operate the ships. Instead, an NVOCC buys space from
carriers and sells this space to shippers.

An ocean carrier who performs all of the services of a carrier, but who does
not own their own vessel(s). They operate by leasing or buying available space in containers and
using their own House Bill of Lading to contract with customers.

An NVOCC is a transportation intermediary, similar to a Freight Forwarder, except that an NVOCC

contracts directly with the shipper to transport containers but does not usually own warehouse space
(as opposed to a freight forwarder, who acts as the shipper's agent to book the shipment for transport
with a carrier, but will typically have access to their own warehouse space).

2
NVOCCs are not controlled or regulated, but they usually must register for a license in the country
where they operate.

SOC (self own container):

SOC stands for 'shipper-owned container and is a metal freight shipping container that is
owned by an individual or business and used to ship cargo across long distances.

It is a shipping container owned by the shipper rather than the shipping line. This distinction
means you're not just renting space on a ship; you own the container where your goods travel.

COC (carrier own container)

A COC is a container owned by a carrier which may be the shipping line or container

leasing companies.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SOC AND COC:

SOC stands for 'shipper-owned container' and is a metal freight shipping

container that is owned by an individual or business and used to ship cargo across long distances. A

COC, or carrier-owned container, is a cargo container that is owned by a carrier company and is

rented out to various consignees.

3
BENEFITS OF SOC :

● SOC containers are a good source to help speed up the supply of goods
across nations, without delaying the shipments till the containers are
returned before goods are offloaded and unloaded.

● SOC helps in avoiding unexpected demurrage and detention costs as they

may escalate to hundreds of dollars if the loading time, customs clearance,
drayage, port congestion, etc. are not taken into account earlier.

● One can source their own cargo as per the requirement especially in remote
areas away from hinterlands where the containers are either unavailable or
are available at much higher rates.

● One can also specifically opt for the containers to buy or lease according to
their needs or for how long according to the current need

BENEFITS OF COC

● COCs are generally utilized for standard shipments on routes with a lot of
cargo flow. There is nearly no incentive for using your own container if the
carrier has availability of ample boxes. And if the end-to-end move has been
fairly paid for at the same time, so it becomes economical to use a COC then.

● Once they are returned, there’s no concern about the containers as it’s not the
shipper’s responsibility.

● It’s much simpler to use a COC container, one just has to pay an “all in”
freight payment to the carrier to move their goods.

● COCs allow for higher freight rate discounts especially in shipments that
originate in high “surplus areas” as the shippers help the carriers save some
money by utilizing their COC to export cargo

4
Difference between freight forwarder and NVOCC:

Freight forwarders do not own their own containers and use the
containers of the shipping lines, leading NVOCCs have their own fleet of containers.

An NVOCC acts as a middleman between the shipper and the vessel operator
and also issues their own bills of lading. Whereas, a freight forwarder is authorized by the shipper to
act and make decisions on their behalf.

CONTAINER TYPES:

1. Dry container

Dry containers are used to transport and store non-perishable or dry items. In fact, dry containers are
mainly suited to products that aren't liquid, gas, or hazardous if mishandled. For example: Books and
paper products.

5
2. Reefer container

A refrigerated container or reefer is an intermodal container (shipping container) used in intermodal

freight transport that is capable of refrigeration for the transportation of temperature-sensitive,
perishable cargo such as fruits, vegetables, meat, fish, seafood, and other similar items.

The standard reefer trailer has an internal volume of around 3,000 cubic feet, with a total payload
capacity of 55,000 pounds evenly distributed. With a total gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of
65,000 pounds, standard reefer trailers are more than capable of hauling your next temperature-
controlled load.

6
3. Flat rack

A flat rack container is used for transporting or storing cargo with a unique
dimension. As the name implies, the container is flat and cargo can be loaded either from the sides or
from the top.

Flat rack are mostly used when shipping out-of-gauge (OOG) cargo — or cargo that's
too large to fit into standard 20-foot or 40-foot shipping containers. That said, flat racks can be used to
ship cargo that would fit into a container, but happens to be easier to load onto a flat rack.

Flat racks most commonly come in 2 sizes: 20 feet and 40 feet. The choice depends on the
size of the cargo. Usually the dimensions of these two types only differ in length. The width and
height are often similar..

7
4. Open top

An open top container is a shipping container without a roof. Open top containers are to be loaded
from above and are therefore most commonly used to load heavy goods or mortar by means of a crane
or fork lift truck. The open top container can be covered by a tarpaulin.

They are fitted with a PVC tarpaulin cover and attachable bows with cable sealing
devices. The door header can also be swung out to make the stuffing of cargo more convenient.
Manufactured from steel, open top containers come in 20ft and 40ft sizes.

8
5. Side open container

Open Side containers are used in situations where greater flexibility is needed for cargo handling,
allowing more efficient and faster loading and unloading compared to standard containers.

They're popular for places to store their materials, but they're also an easy way to ship
heavy equipment and they provide an additional area for the staff to relax between shifts. They have
also been used to create plug-n-play container units for miners is provided.

CONTAINER HANDLING EQUIPMENT:

● STRADDLE CARRIER

The most common use of straddle carriers is in port terminals and intermodal yards, where they are
used for stacking and moving ISO standard containers. The carrier straddles its load, picking it up and
carrying it by connecting to the top lifting points using a container spreader.

Loading/unloading of truck trailer. Container stacking/storage. Selecting and using the required tools
and equipment. Working safely around other machines and personnel.

11
● Rubber tyred gantry crane (RTG)

RTG cranes (Rubber tyred gantry cranes, also called transtainers) are mobile gantry cranes used in
intermodal operations to ground or stack containers. Intermodal operations means these containers can
be used across different modes of transport - from ship to rail to truck - without unloading and
reloading their cargo.

Duties and responsibilities:

● Efficient handling of relevant containers as per the instructions

provided in accordance with safety guidelines.

● Loading and unloading of containers to/from trucks as per instructions

provided by the computerized system.

12
● Rail mounted container gantry crane
(RMG)

Rail Mounted Gantry cranes are large, heavy-duty cranes that run on fixed rails. They are primarily
used for stacking and moving containers within a container yard, intermodal terminal, or rail terminal.
RMG cranes can span multiple rows of containers, making them highly effective for dense stacking
operations.

13
● STS CRANE ( ship to shore )

The main purpose of STS crane is to handle the transfer of containers between ships and the shore,
ensuring a smooth and organized flow of cargo. These cranes are typically positioned on the edge of a
port, with their main structure spanning over the water, allowing them to reach the ships that dock at
the terminal.

14
CONTAINER LOADING TYPES :

1, Full container load [ FCL ]

2, Less container load [ LCL ]

1, FULL CONTAINER LOAD:

Full Container Load is a shipment type where a cargo occupies the full size of a
container. Sometimes the container may not be fully filled, but the rate is charged on the basis of a full
container. FCL is the standard form of shipping for a large cargo.

BENEFITS OF FCL

The FCL Agreement is common for large-volume shipments because of the

following reasons: Less risk of cargo being damaged, cheaper per volume rates, faster lead times than
other forms of sea shipments.

2, LESS CONTAINER LOAD

15
Ship your small boxes and pallets per your needs instead of waiting to fill a full container with your
cargo. By choosing LCL, you only pay for the space your cargo is occupying in the container. You
share the space with others as well as the costs.

BENEFITS OF LCL

● Cost Efficiency. LCL logistics provides a cost-effective option

for shippers because it allows them to only pay for the space the
shipment occupies in the container.

● Flexibility. LCL cargo allows flexibility in logistics operations.
