A growing anger against the colonial government was thus bringing together =4
various groups and classes of Indians into a common struggle for freedom in the
first half of the twentieth century. The Congress under the leadership of Mahatma
Gandhi tried to channel people’s grievances into organised movements for
Page 7 of 10
independence. Through such movements the nationalists tried to forge national
unity. But as we have seen, diverse groups and classes participated in these
movements with varied aspirations and expectations. As their grievances were
wide-ranging, freedom from colonial rule also meant different things to different
people. The Congress continuously attempted to resolve differences and ensure
that the demands of one group did not alienate another. This is precisely why the
unity within the movement often broke down. The high points of Congress activity
and nationalist unity were followed by phases of disunity and inner conflict
between groups.

Considering the disadvantages and rising opposition to multi-purpose =4
projects, some thought water harvesting would be a viable alternative, both socio-
economically and environmentally. Water harvesting systems existed in ancient
India along with sophisticated hydraulic structures. Rainwater, groundwater, river
water, and flood water were harvested according to the local ecological conditions
and people's needs in keeping with their knowledge of rainfall regimes and soil
types. The Western Himalayas are renowned for their diversion channels, such as
guls and kuls. The practice of rooftop rainwater harvesting was common in
Rajasthan, particularly to store drinking water. Bengali farmers developed
inundation channels to irrigate their fields along the flood plains. In arid and semi-
arid regions, agricultural fields were converted into rain-fed storage structures that
allowed water to stand and moisten the soil, like Khadins in Jaisalmer or Johads in
other parts of Rajasthan.

job security and also leave no time for your family. This will reduce your sense of
security and freedom. Similarly, for development, people look at a mix of goals. It
is true that if women are engaged in paid work, their dignity in the household and
society increases. However, it is also the case that if there is respect for women
there would be more sharing of housework and a greater acceptance of women
working outside. A safe and secure environment may allow more women to take
up a variety of jobs or run a business. Hence, the developmental goals that people
have are not only about better income but also about other important things in life.
