DESIGN AND MANUFACTURING, KURNOOL
Jagannathagattu, Dinnedevarapadu, Kurnool – 518002, Andhra Pradesh, INDIA
(An Institute of National Importance under Ministry of Education, Govt. of India)

Course Name: Basic Concepts in Manufacturing Processes

(Topic: Open – Tool Life)
NOTE: Draw suitable sketches/diagrams wherever necessary
Que (1) A tool has a life of 9 min. when cutting speed at 250 m/min. Calculate the cutting
speed for the same tool to have a tool life of 160 min. (Take n = 0.33)
Que (2) Calculate the percentage change in cutting speed required to give 50 percent
reduction in tool life. (Take n = 0.22)
Que (3) Tool life of 9 min was obtained during straight turning of a 24 mm diameter steel
bar at 300 rpm with HSS tool. When the same bar was turned at 250 rpm, the tool
life increased to 48.5 min. What will be the tool life at a speed of 280 rpm?
𝜋𝐷𝑁
(Hint: 𝑣 = 1000) m/min
Que (4) The Taylorian tool life equation for machining C-40 steel with a 18:4:1 HSS cutting
tool at a feed rate of 0.2 mm/min and depth of cut of 2 mm is given by VTn = C,
where n and C are constants. The following V and T observations have been noted:
V (m/min) = 25 35
T (min) = 90 20
Calculate: (1) n and C
(2) Hence recommend the cutting speed for a desired tool life of 60 min.
Que (5) Using Taylor equation and using n = 0.5, C = 400. Calculate the percentage increase
in tool life when cutting speed is reduced by 50%.

Que (6) In a turning operation, it was observed that the tool life was 100 min and 50 min at
cutting speeds of 25 m/min and 100 m/min respectively. Find out the tool life at
200 m/min under the same cutting conditions.
Que (7) A tool life of 100 min is observed from a cutting tool at a cutting speed of 25 m/min,
and 10 min at 33.33 m/min. What is the cutting speed for a 60 min tool life.
Que (8) In Taylor’s Equation if n = 0.25 and C = 300. What should be V for a tool life of
1 Hour.
Que (9) Using Taylor’s tool life equation and taking n = 0.12, calculate the percentage
change in cutting speed required to give an 80% reduction in tool life.
Que (10) If in turning of a steel rod by a given cutting tool (material and geometry) at a
given machining condition under a given environment, the tool life decreases from
80 min to 20 min due to increase in cutting velocity Vc from 60 m/min to 120
m/min, then at what cutting velocity the life of that tool under the same condition
and environment will be 40 min?
