Overview of the Course

1. Develop fundamental CFD knowledge


2. Hands on experience with MATLAB/Python and ANSYS Fluent
3. Apply CFD to real-world engineering problems

Course Contents
Week 1: Introduction to CFD
- Introduction to CFD, its importance in engineering
applications, governing equations of fluid motion, and
historical advancements in CFD, Review of partial differential
equations, numerical discretization techniques, and the likes
of Taylor series.

Week 2: Solving Standard Problems using Finite Difference Method


- Overview of numerical solution techniques, introduction to
MATLAB for CFD, solving basic fluid flow equations using MATLAB
scripting, understanding the Finite Difference Method (FDM),
solving 1D and 2D diffusion and advection equations, and
implementing FDM in MATLAB.
Course Contents
Week 3&4: Introduction to FVM and a walkthrough of ANSYS Fluent
workbench
- Introduction to the Finite Volume Method (FVM), comparison with
FDM, overview of ANSYS Fluent GUI, setting up simple CFD
problems
- Creating geometry and meshing for a 2D cylinder, applying
boundary conditions, running simulations, and analyzing vortex
shedding effects.

Week 5: Setting up 3D simulations


- Extending simulations to 3D, meshing strategies for complex
geometries, setting up turbulence models, and post-processing
Course Contents
Week 6: Setting up Conjugate Heat Transfer Analysis in ANSYS
Fluent
- Setting up a CHT problem, analyzing thermal gradients, and
interpreting results.

Week 7: Introduction to Flow over an airfoil and simulating flow


over NACA 0012
- Understanding aerodynamic characteristics of an airfoil,
setting up boundary conditions, and running steady-state
simulations.
- Advanced post-processing techniques, unsteady flow simulations,
validation against experimental data, and analyzing lift and
drag
