SCDS1001 AI Literacy

Group Project

Overview
This course includes a significant group project designed to enhance your learning through
collaboration, research, and presentation skills. You will work with peers from diverse
backgrounds to explore an AI-related topic of your choice, design a poster, and present your
findings in an interactive poster exhibition.

Your group may choose to focus on a general AI topic (e.g., machine learning algorithms,
ethical considerations of AI, the future of artificial intelligence) or explore how AI is applied
in a specific field (e.g., AI in healthcare, AI in finance, AI in education). The flexibility of this
project allows for a multi-faceted approach, encouraging students to incorporate discussions
from various perspectives, including but not limited to:

• Historical: How AI has evolved in this field or topic over time.

• Ethical: The moral and societal dilemmas AI presents.
• Scientific & Technical: The underlying AI models and technologies.
• Environmental: The impact of AI on sustainability and resource management.
• Social: How AI affects human behavior, employment, and society at large.
• Your poster should assume no prior knowledge of AI and be designed for a general
audience. This means keeping explanations clear, concise, and accessible, avoiding
technical jargon when possible, and using visuals and examples to aid understanding.

Objectives
By completing this project, students will:
• Develop teamwork and collaboration skills.
• Explore and research a general AI topic or AI’s role in a specific field.
• Communicate ideas clearly for a non-expert audience.
• Engage in peer learning by reviewing and discussing different projects.
• Provide and receive constructive feedback, improving both critical thinking and
presentation skills.

Workload Expectation
Each student is expected to spend 16 hours on this project, including brainstorming, meetings,
research, writing the proposal, drafting and refining the poster, preparing and practicing the
presentation, and participating in peer review. Work should be shared equitably, and peer
evaluations will assess individual contributions.

Group Size
Each project group should have 4 to 6 students, with 5 being the preferred size for balanced
collaboration. This ensures a manageable workload while allowing diverse perspectives and
skills to contribute effectively. Groups should aim for equitable participation, with all members
actively involved in research, poster creation, and presentation.

Getting Help
Each group will have a Student TA Mentor to provide guidance on research, poster design, and
presentation preparation. Additional support is available at the Help Desk (details here), open
daily for drop-in assistance, and from your tutorial TA. We also encourage students to use the
Discussion Forum on Ed for quick questions, idea sharing, and peer support. Don’t hesitate to
reach out—help is always available!

Milestone 1. Group Formation

In the first tutorial, you will be assigned to a group. Each group will be assigned two mentors:
one Teaching Assistant (TA) and one student TA. This initial phase is crucial for team building
and preliminary discussions. You are encouraged to start brainstorming potential topics for your
group project. While there is no formal deliverable for this milestone, it is important to gather
and record the contact details of all group members. Additionally, you should verify that all
group members are correctly listed on Moodle.

Milestone 2. Topic Selection

By the conclusion of the second tutorial session (see deadline in table above), your group must
submit a project title and an abstract to Moodle. Engage with your mentors during the session
to ensure the suitability and relevance of your chosen topic. The abstract should be concise,
ranging from 150 to 300 words, and must clearly articulate the motivation behind your project.
This milestone is key to setting the direction of your research or project work. We have added
a few sample topics at the end of this document for your reference.

Milestone 3. Poster Draft

For the third tutorial session, prepare and submit a draft of your project poster in both PPTX
and PDF formats to Moodle. Ensure that both files are identical, with the PDF being a direct
conversion of the PowerPoint file. The poster should be designed in A0 size and formatted in
portrait orientation. This draft will form the basis for feedback in the subsequent sessions.

Milestone 4. Mock Presentation

During the fourth tutorial, participate in a mock presentation where your TA will review your
poster and pose questions. This session is designed to simulate the dynamics of an actual
presentation and is geared more towards an interactive discussion than a traditional
presentation. It is crucial to gauge the knowledge level of your audience and tailor your
presentation accordingly. Actively seek clarification on any feedback you receive to ensure you
understand and can implement improvements effectively.

Milestone 5. Final Poster

Submit the final version of your poster, in both PPTX and PDF formats, to Moodle by the
specified deadline. As with the draft, ensure both formats are identical and that the PDF is

generated from the PowerPoint file. Maintain the A0 size and portrait orientation. Be aware
that late submissions will not be accepted, so plan accordingly to ensure timely completion.

Milestone 6. Poster Exhibition

The culmination of your project will be displayed at the poster exhibition, scheduled for April
23 from 11:30 to 12:20 at the Foyer outside the Grand Hall. Please arrive by 11:15 to set up
your poster and acclimate to the environment. Attendance is mandatory for all group members.
If you are unable to attend, you must submit a medical certificate to our Head TA via email.

During the exhibition, your poster will undergo two reviews: one by a designated reviewer and
another by your peers. It is important to remain near your poster to present and discuss your
work with attendees. Additionally, your group will conduct a peer review of another group’s
poster, as assigned on Ed. This review should be collaborative among group members, resulting
in a single comprehensive review. Lastly, each group member must submit an intra-group peer
review detailing individual contributions to the project. This helps in assessing participation
and the distribution of work within the group.

Conclusion
This project is an opportunity to explore AI in a way that aligns with your interests—whether
by focusing on a general AI topic or its application in a specific field. The interactive poster
exhibition will showcase a diverse range of projects, allowing students to learn from each other,
provide valuable feedback, and receive constructive input to improve their work.

Since your poster will be viewed by a general audience, it is essential to use clear language,
define key terms, and present information in an engaging and accessible way. Your goal is to
help others understand AI concepts and appreciate its broader implications, regardless of their
background knowledge.

Approach the project with curiosity, creativity, and collaboration!
